4A-3A North Region Results: Springbrook Crowns 3!

Springbrook crowned fourth-place Class 4A-3A state finishing junior Lincoln Wendel (165), junior Sean Torrez (106) and senior Ricky Dixon (113) as Class 4A–3A North Region champions last weekend at Aberdeen High.

Also winning regional titles were Class 4A-3A state runner-up junior Andrew Yuen (126) and sixth-place state finishing junior Issac Ogunlade (190) of Einstein, third-place state finishing sophomore Victor Marks-Jenkins (157) of Perry Hall, fourth-place state finishing senior Toby Eveleth (120) of Catonsville, and sixth-place state finishing senior Chris Nice (144) of Bel Air.

Paint Branch senior Fabian Dawit (132), Franklin sophomore Josh Gray (138), Aberdeen junior Liam Peterson (150), Bel Air junior Joel Tristan Ouandji Nana (175), Parkville senior Braeden Poorbaugh (215), and Dundalk junior Andre Andrades (285) were all title-winners who qualified for this weekend’s Class 4A-3A state tournament at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro on March 1-2.

Wendel, Torrez and Dixon placed first, second and third in the previous week’s Montgomery County Tournament. Wendel is 45-0, Torrez is 42-4, and Dixon is 39-4.

Wendel won his title bout, 8-5, over Towson senior Henry Kline, who was a runner-up in Baltimore County after losing by 55-second fall to Owings Mills junior Cregg Ngounou.

Wendel reached the finals on a fall in 2:54 over Westminster sophomore Josh Little before winning his semifinal bout, 7-2, against Einstein junior Josh Ogunlade.

Little finished third at regions following a 10-6 victory over Ogunlade. Little was a runner-up in Carroll County following a 6-1 loss to South Carroll sophomore Landon Hamper. Ogunlade finished second in Montgomery County after an 8-6 loss to Wendel.

Torrez used a 34-second pin and a 17-0 technical fall to reach the finals. Torrez decked Perry Hall junior Hegan Chhantyal, a Baltimore County tournament runner-up, in 2:34. Dixon won by fall in 3:13 before winning his semifinal bout by 17-5 major decision. Dixon also won an 18-4 major decision over Franklin junior Tucker Rudo in his championship match.

Yuen and Issac Ogunlade were coming off Montgomery County championship victories. Yuen is 34-1, and Ogunlade, 30-1.

Yuen used falls in 62 seconds and 1:42 to reach the finals, where he won by medical forfeit over Baltimore County champion senior Maximus Conley of Franklin. Conley is 40-2. A week earlier in the county tournament finals, Yuen won his championship bout, 6-3, over defending Class 4A-3A state titlist Neil Sharma of Magruder.

Issac Ogunlade required an overtime, 12-10 decision to defeat Baltimore County runner-up senior Chris Nwachukwu of Kenwood, who lost his county championship bout, 12-1, a week earlier to undefeated senior Maleeke Ayonrinde of New Town.

Issac Ogunlade reached the finals following an 18-0 technical fall and a 13-4 major decision over junior Juan Rodgers of Aberdeen, who finished fourth at regions.

Marks-Jenkins is a two-time Baltimore County and regional champion, having improved his record on the year to 43-0, and his career mark to 93-1.

Marks-Jenkins used a 19-3 technical fall and a pin in 1:50 to reach the finals, where he decked Westminster's Carroll County champion, senior Braden Vacca, in 2:49. Vacca is 45-2.

Eveleth reached the finals following an 8-1 decision and a 19-2 technical fall, winning his title bout, 6-0, over third-place Carroll County finishing freshman Conor Ruane of Westminster.

Eveleth is 24-1 after having won his first regional crown in three championship berths, and his initial Baltimore County title after being a runner-up as a sophomore.

Nice had falls in 3:35, 37 seconds and 79 seconds, the last against Aberdeen junior Chase Lineberry. Nice had already pinned Lineberry a week earlier in 4:29 of their Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference (UCBAC) championship bout.

Nice is 42-1 after winning his third regional title and his first title, the latter in three championship bout appearances. Nice placed sixth at states for the second time a year ago.

Andrades improved to 26-1, adding his regional crown to the previous weekend’s third-place finish at the Baltimore County tournament, with his title bout fall in 5:26 over UCBAC runner-up junior Miles Putney of Edgewood. Andrades reached the finals after consecutive decisions of 7-2 and 8-3.

.

Dawit’s record rose to 38-3 with his regional championship, which is a major improvement following his fourth place finish in the Montgomery County tournament. Dawit scored a championship bout fall in 5:22 against Franklin junior Jacob Jones, who placed third in the Baltimore County tournament. Dawit had reached the finals following a 7-0 decision and an 8-5 decision over Springbrook junior Chris Mendoza, who finished fourth at regions.

Poorbaugh’s record rises to 39-4 in the wake of his regional championship success, culminating with a fall in 2:43 of his title bout with Franklin senior Kysahn Carter. The pin was the third for Poorbaugh in as many tournament matches, following those in 2:40 and 2:48. The triumph happened a week after Poorbaugh was a runner-up in the Baltimore County tournament.

Peterson was the host Eagles’ lone regional champion, decking all three opponents in 47 seconds, 3:23 and finally 5:21 of his championship victory over Baltimore County runner-up junior Sean Lippman of Lansdowne. Peterson improved his record on the year to 35-6 after having finished third at the previous week’s UCBACs.

Nana’s championship effort required a 2-1 victory over Baltimore County champion senior Roman Kaminski of Dulaney, who slipped to 32-5. Nana added his regional title to the UCBAC crown he earned a week earlier, reaching the finals following a fall in 3:03 and a 3-2 decision over Paint Branch senior Philpose Mariyo, who finished third at regions.

Gray is yet another whose championship performance at regionals followed a fourth-place finish a week earlier in the Baltimore County tournament. Gray pinned senior Gregory Vasquez at 4:35 of their title bout, this, after winning his initial match by 7-2 decision and his second over Aberdeen junior John Matherly by the overtime score of 6-4.

A runner-up in the UCBACS, Matherly finished third at regions after scoring a fall in 1:48 against junior Silas Montgomery of Springbrook.
