Bison Duals - Open Results

In addition to the Bison Duals, there was also an open tournament ran in Oaks, Pennsylvania over the weekend. What is interesting is that some of the participants in the open did not wrestle in the duals and vice versa. For our purposes here, we will focus on the high school age group only, the 18U division for both boys and girls.

The boys crowned one champion in Quince Orchard’s Tristan Cabugwas, whose final was a best of three affair since he and Ohio’s Sam Wilburn were the only heavyweight participants. Cabugwas collected two quick pins to claim the gold in 26 and 40 seconds.

Cabugwas’ high school teammate, Harrison Spadoni reached the 132lb final before being pinned by Lance Bordeleau (New Hampshire), in just over a minute, 1:07. Another Cougar, Aleksander Malinowski, was third at 215lbs without winning a match. Malinowski’s weight had three participants and he was swept by those foes to land in the number three spot.

Four more wrestlers placed third, South Carroll’s Davy Snyder (157), Glen Burnie’s Noah Obinna (144), Quince Orchard’s Ashton Hunte (175), and Leo Saravia (120). Snyder lost his first match then battled back to take the bronze over Maryland’s Michael Dyke, 13-2. Obinna also downed a fellow Marylander for his bronze, pinning Stephen Decatur’s Jake Saullo in 37 seconds. Interestingly, he too, lost his first bout and bounced back.

Hunte was involved in a four-man bracket that saw him go 1-2 with his 46 second pin over Delaware’s Ian Land giving him his third-place finish. Saravia was in a traditional bracket where he reached the semis then lost to the eventual champion, Hobe Givens (DE), before beating Pennsylvania’s Aidan Sierra, 6-4, for third.

Three girls brought gold back to Maryland, Stephen Decatur’s Chaniah Bernier (165-175), West Nottingham Academy’s Reagan Ramadan (145-152), and Good Counsel’s Bella Sowards (132-138).

Bernier was in a weight with just her and Quince Orchard’s Amirah Abegesah. Bernier won the first of the best of three by a 12-2 score, then lost the second bout 6-4, before winning the rubber match, 10-2. Both were at 170 for the Maryland state tournament where Bernier was second and Abegesah fifth.

Ramadan’s weight class had three wrestlers and was run in a Round Robin format. Ramadan beat the silver medalist, Delaware’s Amber Hunter-Snyder, 10-0, and Quince Orchard’s Esther Hernandez, who placed third, by fall in 2:27.

Sowards pinned New Jersey’s Lamiah Berry in 3:36 of her title bout. Sowards also blanked third place finishing Nadia Ungurean of Williamsport, 10-0.

Two girls brought home silver medals, Stephen Decatur’s Rachel Plata (126) and Atholton’s Julianna Oxenberg (100-110). Plata fell to Virginia’s Morgan Layman, 9-5. Oxenberg was involved in a best of three final with New York’s Nialah Hawkins in which she was pinned in the first match, 2:21, won the second (19-8), before losing the third, 12-8.
