Boonsboro’s top-ranked senior Tanner Halling (132) was among a school-record six champions and a record-tying 11 finalists as the 41st-ranked Warriors captured their first-ever Washington County title on Saturday, 211-199.5, over runner-up Williamsport at North Hagerstown High.

“I’m super-excited for my team,” said Halling, who won his fourth straight county title by running his record on the year to 42-0 on falls in 18 and 35 seconds, the latter in his title match against Smithsburg sophomore Logan Crutchfield. “This team has a ton of talent, and we’ve been getting better and better all year long. The past few weeks, we’ve had very productive and positive practices. Our team is very goofy. We have a lot of fun together and I believe that’s why we won this year.”

Halling has placed third, second and first in the past three Class 2A-1A state tournaments, is already the Warriors’ first-ever three-time regional champion heading into next weekend's event and can become their program’s first-ever two-time state title winner in two weeks.

Armed with a career record of 172-2, Halling has become Washington County’s All-Time Career victories leader, surpassing the mark of 163-2 previously held by North Hagerstown’s four-time Class 4A-3A state champion Aaron Brooks.

Brooks went 45-1 as a freshman, 43-1 as a sophomore, 46-0 as a junior, and 22-0 as a senior in 2018. Brooks also won his fourth straight NCAA title at Penn State in March, and defeated Javrail Shapiev of Uzbekistan, 5-0, to earn an Olympic Freestyle bronze medal in the 2024 Paris Games in August.

“I have always wanted to have the winning record, but I never looked at it until this year,” said Halling, an A-student who is headed for Frostburg State University. “I have my goals for myself, and along the way, I have just accomplished some really great things that I wasn’t really trying to do.”

Halling was joined on the victory podium by seniors Alex Vittetoe (144) and fourth-ranked Trevor Sowers (165) on falls in 76 and 46 seconds, sophomore Cody Mimnall of Boonsboro (120) and JT Griffith (190) on pins in 47 and 37 seconds, and freshman Blake Nalley (113) on a 16-0 technical fall.

"This is our first time ever winning a county title at Boonsboro," said 13th-year Warriors’ coach Brett Nalley, Blake's uncle. "We had 11 finalists last year, so this year, we tied that record. We had four champions last year, so having six this year is a program-high and a big step forward for our program."

Finishing second for the Warriors were seniors Camrynn Rogers (138), Graham McLean (175) and Idris Milam (215), 18th-ranked freshmen Luke Bucheimer (106), and junior Kayden McEwan (126).

“I can’t believe this is only Boonsboro’s first team county title. We’ve had really good teams in the past, with multiple state placers and tons of hard workers,” said Halling, who went 37-1 as a freshman, 45-1 as a sophomore, and 48-0 last year. “I think this year; we wanted it more than ever. I’m definitely going to miss the team, but we’re not done yet. We have 11 people going to the regionals and we’re going to have some fun.”

Runner-up Williamsport also crowned six champions led by third-ranked senior Adin Hastings (215), sophomores Logan Durham (150) and Xavier Bowie (285), juniors Aidan Rhea (138) and 24th-ranked Ben Kaetzel (175) and senior Lucas Stephenson (126).

Hastings won his fourth straight county title as well, having been a Class 2A-1A state runner-up last season after winning states as a sophomore.

“It was awesome to become a four-time county champion because it’s no easy thing to do. However, there is more to come this season,” said Hastings, who will join Halling at Frostburg. “Potentially being a two-time state champion is super important for me because that’s the next best thing. With me having gotten second at states last year, I’m very motivated to get this next state title.”

Also winning crowns were freshman Logan Ardinger (106) of South Hagerstown and sophomore Marcello Falcinio (157) of North Hagerstown.
