Curley rises to the top at Parkville

Archbishop Curley freshman Liam Rose (106 pounds) and senior teammate Kahlil Regan (285) earned their first-ever high school tournament titles among five finalists and seven wrestlers who placed within the top four of their weight divisions for the victorious Friars in Saturday’s 17-team Knightmare Invitational at Parkville High.

Senior Dylan Fish (165), junior Bailen Boutz (190) and freshman Evan Kaliakoudas (113) finished second as the 26th-ranked Friars (208 points) edged 22nd-ranked runner-up Calvert Hall (205.5), their Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association rivals.

The Friars also received a third-placed finish from 15th-ranked sophomore Oscar Davis (144), with a fourth-place effort from freshman Reed Boettcher (138), son of coach Paul Boettcher.

“Liam Rose coming in as a decorated junior leaguer and winning his first high school tournament out of the gate is so awesome. Our other champion, Kahlil, is very much on the other side of the spectrum, not just because Liam is at 106 and Kahlil is at 285,” Paul Boettcher said. “Kahlil is a senior who started wrestling as a freshman and he’s gotten significantly better each year. It was really good to see Kahlil finally capture that elusive first tournament crown. It’s crazy that Liam and Kahlil won their first high school tournaments at the same time given their age and experience differences.”

The 20th-ranked Rose used a 97-second fall and a 7-5 decision to reach his title bout, where he scored the final eight points for an 8-6 decision over Linganore freshman Trey Covey after trailing, 6-0.

“I came out wrestling a little flat in the finals match. Going down by six was tough, but after I settled in, I began to look around at my teammates and coaches,” Rose said. “They gave me the desire to push harder. From there, I focused on scoring points and clawing my way back. Trey is a solid wrestler, and it took everything I had to hand on and win.”

The sixth-ranked Regan scored an 18-2 technical fall and a 7-2 decision in advance of his championship match with 14th-ranked Edgewood senior Miles Putney, whom he edged by 4-3 decision.

“First and foremost, I will continue to listen to my coaches for guidance in practices and in matches,” said Regan, who placed in last year’s MIAA and MIS tournaments. “I am thankful for the opportunity to wrestle such great athletes and to be able to show my prowess. I will continue to train hard, stay aggressive and to pursue excellence in life, sports and in the classroom.”

The second-place Cardinals crowned 14th-ranked junior Joshua Jackson (138) and fourth-ranked senior Griffin Stewart (150) among eight wrestlers who finished within the top four.

The Cardinals also received third-placed finishes from seniors Adrian Stowbunenko (126) and 18th-ranked Aidan Kammer (157), sophomore Izaac Robertucci (175) and freshman Gavin Young (106), with fourth-place efforts from juniors Ty Hawk (144) and Ivan Stowbunenko (190).

Calvert Hall was hurt, however, by the disqualification for flagrant misconduct of its 120-pound finalist and his Parkville opponent whose accumulated points were eliminated.

Jackson used a 41-second fall and a 17-6 major decision to reach the finals, where he held off Arundel’s 20th-ranked senior Cole Figueroa. Jackson won, 11-9, after having built an 11-0 lead against Figueroa, a returning Anne Arundel County champion and Class 4A-3A East Region runner-up.

“Winning my championship match against Cole Figueroa was one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced throughout the year,” Jackson said. “But practicing with Griffin has made me better in situations like that. It pushed me to my mental and physical limits, but I was prepared for that moment. Staying focused and believing in my training helped me to persevere.”

The fourth-ranked Griffin earned a 55-second pin and a 25-10 technical fall over 16th-ranked senior Baltimore County runner-up Alex Hynes of Patapsco to reach his title bout, where he had a difficult time winning, 7-4, over 17th-ranked sophomore Matteo Brown of Arundel.

The difference was Stewart’s second-period, three-point takedown which broke a 4-all tie against Brown, who finished fourth in last year’s Anne Arundel County tournament and third in the Class 4A-3A East Region.

“Knightmare is always a great way to start the season for our team, and I feel that Josh and I were prepared. But we definitely still have some work to get too. I had a tough wrestler in the semifinals in Alex Hynes, but I wrestled my match, got to my moves and ended up winning by technical fall,” Griffin said.

“That set the tone for the rest of the day. By the time the finals came around, our whole team was pretty fired up and ready to wrestle. Seeing Josh win a close finals match was awesome, and then when I was up, I had Matteo Brown. He was a great wrestler, so I wrestled him smart, knowing I was giving up and that he would be stronger than me. It was a great match.”

Also crowning two champions each were the fourth-place Rising Sun Tigers, the fifth-place Linganore Lancers and the seventh-place Richard Montgomery Rockets.

Winning for the Tigers were seventh-ranked junior Zach Garvin (165) and sixth-ranked senior Elijah Farr (215). Garvin was named the tournament’s Outstanding Upperweight Wrestler.

Garvin’s victories comprised a 49-second pin and consecutive technical falls of 18-2, and, 17-0, the latter in his championship rout of the 11th-ranked Fish, who was third at last year’s MIAA tournament.

“I felt great about my performance this weekend. I went out and scored a lot of points really to put on a display,” said Garvin, a winner of last year’s Upper Chesapeake Athletic Conference title who was a regional runner-up and fifth-place state finisher. “I demonstrated all of the hard work I’ve put in these last couple of months. My goals for this season are to just continue to improve pon my offense and spread the gap between me and my opponents each week, which, hopefully, will culminate in a state title in March.”

Farr earned his school-record 100th, 101st and 102nd career pins in 2:42, 1:46 and 2:57, the last one coming in his championship match against 15th-ranked Arundel junior Pierce Read. Farr has won three each in Upper Chesapeake Athletic Conference and regional titles, and placed third, fifth and sixth at the Class 2A-1A state tournament.

Being crowned for the Lancers were Class 4A-3A state champion Brennan Considine (132) and third-place state finisher Peyton Pickett (175), each of whom is a sixth-ranked senior.

Considine used a 36-second pin and a 14-2 major decision to reach his title bout, where he earned a 16-4 major decision over Arundel junior Anthony Allen, a third-place finisher in the Anne Arundel County tournament. Considine has placed third, first and second in the Frederick County tournament, third, first and first at the regionals, and third and first at states.

Pickett earned falls in 2:50, 1:58 and 25 seconds to earn his title shot against eighth-ranked MIAA runner-up Haden Myers of St. Pauls, a junior who lost, 9-0.

“It always feels good to start with a win,” said Pickett, who has placed as high as third and first at counties, second and third at regions, and third at states. “There is a lot of work that goes into the offseason, and it feels good to be competing again. I feel like I wrestled well over the weekend, but there are always little things to improve on as the season moves forward.”

The Rockets’ received championships from Womack brothers, sixth-ranked sophomore Joey (113) and 10th-ranked junior Isisah (144), with Isisah being named the Outstanding Middleweight Wrestler.

Joey used falls in 1:47 and 1:56 to reach the title bout, where he outlasted Kaliakoudas by 7-5 decision. Isisah used a 16-1 technical fall and a pin in 2:35 to reach the finals. There, Isisah earned a 6-4 decision over 12th-ranked senior Luca Brown of Arundel, who finished fourth at last year’s Class 4A-3A state tournament.

The Womacks returned from St. Frances of Baltimore to a Rockets’ program where, as a freshman, Isisah placed third in the Montgomery County tournament before winning a regional title and placing fifth at the Class 4A-3A state tournament at 113 pounds.

Isisah and Joey had enjoyed a season of success at St. Frances, finishing first and third at last

year’s Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament. Their efforts helped to pace the Panthers to a fifth-place finish in the tournament.

Isisah became the Panthers’ first ever MIAA champion with a 7-6 win over Mount St. Joseph’s Jake Tamai, improving his record at the time to 2-1 against a wrestler who was a defending Maryland Private Schools state champion.

Isisah emerged from the third seed, reaching the MIAA finals following a 6-4 overtime victory

over second-seed Henry Gessford of Archbishop Spalding. Although Gessford had not

previously faced Isisah, their common opponent, Austin Wood, had beaten Womack but lost to Gessford.

Other title winners were 16th-ranked senior Sean Lippman (157) of Lansdowne and sophomore Cooper Monroe (126) of Boys Latin, the latter being named Outstanding Lowerweight Wrestler.

Lippman used a pair of 63-second pins to reach his title match, where he planted Parkville senior Haden Laney in 3:59.

“My thoughts on my dominant tournament performance are that I came into this event very confident and focused on winning,” Lippman said. “That was my mindset, and that was my objective. The way I won my finals match, I feel like it’s a result of the way I prepared myself mentally before the match – going over moves in my head and staying cool, calm and collected.”

Monroe’s victories comprised major decisions of 16-7 and 22-9, as well as an 18-3 technical fall, the latter against Rising Sun’s 12th-ranked Aidan Stewart, who was fifth at Class 2A-1A states last season.

“It felt amazing to be able to wrestle as well as I did in this tournament. The guys at Boys Latin have been putting in the work constantly. A big part of my performance was thanks to my coaches, especially coach [Justin] Fitch. I’ve always had natural speed, strength and intellect, but coach Fitch was able to tie all of my attributes together,” Monroe said.

“We did that through practice and mental repetition in the room. We talked about game plans for me between every match of the tournament, adjusting to where I struggled and where I worked best. I’m best on my feet, so that’s where I decided to wrestle for most of the tournament. Plans rarely work out perfectly, so I went out for every match ready to show out and to be legendary.”
