Gonzaga dominated last weekend’s DCSAA Wrestling Championships at the St. Alban’s School in Washington D.C. with five champs out of their seven finalists to accumulate 230.5 points, almost 100 more than runner-up St. John’s College’s 133, to win their second straight DC title.

All five of Gonzaga’s champs were ranked first or second in the D.C. ratings. Karim Haitham was in a battle of number ones in his 157lb final. Haitham is top rated at 157lbs, while his opponent, Jackson-Reed’s Alex Ouzts was No. 1 at 165. Haitham came out ahead 8-6.

No. 1 Matt Van Sice claimed a 9-4 victory over No. 2 Mahrzell Sampson of HD Woodson at 175lbs. No. 1 Jet Ward decked No. 4 Jasson Lopez of Bell at 144 with six seconds left in the first period, 1:54.

No. 2 Bojan Sulc also used a pin for his win at 165 over Myles Brown of Dunbar in 1:17. Brown was removed from the rankings last week when did not participate in the D.C. public school tournament but was No. 3 before his removal. At 126, Brayden Meeker came up from 120lbs, where he was No. 2, and defeated another wrestler rising up in weight, St. Alban’s Cyrus Sabet (No. 4 at 120), 20-8.

Falling short in their title quests for Gonzaga were No. 2 Thomas Keefe (150) and No. 3 Chris DiLorenzo (215). DiLorenzo upset No. 1 Ahmar Davis (HD Woodson) in the semis, 3-1. Placing third were No. 2 Rocco McPherson (113), Joseph McPherson (120), and John Keogh (132, No. 2 at 126).

St. John’s crowned two champions, both top ranked at their weights, Zane Messiter (106) and Tom Braden (150). Braden took out Gonzaga’s Keefe, 12-5, after previously beating him 13-11 at the Melee on the Metro. Messiter posted a major decision over No. 3 Erick Perdomo (Bell), 16-5. Perdomo pinned No. 2 Jackson Trinca (Washington Latin) in the semifinals, 3:04, reversing a pin by Trinca at the Melee.

Third-place Sidwell Friends had one titlist in No. 4 Sven Kramer at 215lbs. Kramer rolled to a 12-4 major decision of DiLorenzo. Jackson-Reed’s fourth-place finish came with no champions.

However, fifth-place HD Woodson pushed two grapplers to the top of the podium, No. 2 Caleb Davis (190) and No. 1 Randal Ayaba (285).

Davis handed a 9-5 loss to a wrestler that pinned him a week ago at the D.C. Public School Tournament, No. 1 Malachi Hill of Anacostia. Ayaba pinned Bell’s Jose Garcia in the second period last week. Ayaba ended this meeting in the opening round, 1:33.

Washington Latin tied HD Woodson in the team race and brought home one gold medal from No. 1 Kayode Elion at 113lbs when he stuck No. 4 Nico Candelas of Dunbar. Elion pinned Rocco McPherson in his semifinal, 3:17.

The last three champs are No. 1 Aloysius Fitzpatrick (Model Secondary School for the Deaf) at 120, St. Anselm’s Abbey’s Morgan Lloyd (132, No. 3 at 138), and Georgetown Day School’s Beck Holtzman (138, No. 2 at 144).

Fitzpatrick blanked Sidwell Friend’s No. 3 Luke Borkowski, 5-0. Lloyd also pitched a shutout for his title, 6-0, versus No. 2 Nikita Andrew (Jackson-Reed).

Holtzman waited two months to exact revenge on No. 2 Ethan Glessner of St. John’s. Glessner beat him 4-1 in sudden victory at Ray Oliver in December. In their final meeting this year, Holtzman claimed supremacy in the same exact manner, 4-1 in sudden victory.
