D.C. top ranked Gonzaga gets rolling

Gonzaga gets going and is top-ranked by Legacy Wrestling among Washington, D.C. teams.

Top-ranked junior Bojan Sulc (190) is a defending champion in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, whose tournament title-winner was Paul IV Catholic of Virginia followed by runner-up St. Mary’s Ryken of St. Mary’s County. Guided by fourth-year coach Reggie Snowden, the Purple Eagles finished fourth in the WCACs.

Second-ranked junior Jethro Ward (150) was a WCAC runner-up for the Purple Eagles, with fourth-place efforts from top-ranked seniors Thomas Keefe (157) and Matt VanSice (175) as well as second-ranked sophomore Connor Meeker (120).

In addition, the Purple Eagles are in pursuit of their fourth straight crown in the 16-team D.C. State Athletic Association, with a dual meet record of 2-2 in the conference and 2-3 overall.

VanSice is after his fourth crown in the DCSAA, with Sulc being in pursuit of his third, and Connor Meeker, his second. VanSice has 94 career victories and is closing in on the milestone of 100, making him the first to reach that number since Nathan Thacker with 194 in 2018.

Most recently, VanSice finished first at the Magruder Mad Mats Invitational on December 6-7, where Sulc was a runner-up before finishing third at the Ray Oliver tournament at McDonogh on December 13-14.

Keefe and top-ranked senior Haitham Karim (165) were third at Mad Mats, where second- and third-ranked freshmen John Keough (126) and Alistar Maul (106) were both sixth. Also finishing sixth at Magruder was unranked sophomore Joseph McPherson (120).

The Purple Eagles also feature second-ranked senior Brayden Meeker (120). Brayden will go at 120, and Connor, at 132.

Snowden said that not only will McPherson split time with the siblings, but he also has a twin brother, Rocco, who will be a likely starter at 113 pounds for the postseason.
