Forest Park crowned juniors Rodney Anderson (140), Chad Dickerson (192) and Sahil Noor (217) among four finalists and 10 wrestlers who finished within the top 10 of their weight classes as the Foresters (201.5 points) overcame runner-up Poly (195.5) to win their first-ever Baltimore City Tournament championship on Saturday.
Finishing second was senior Roman Holmes (152), with third-place efforts from junior Malcolm Jackson (115), freshman Jeremiah McLean (122), sophomore Justin Miller (167), and senior DreQuan Golston (287), and juniors Jesse Stevenson (108) and Tyon “Tank” Shuler (159) being fourth.
The Foresters are coached by Eric Khor, a 2009 graduate of River Hill in Howard County who placed third and fourth in counties, and fourth and fifth in regions.
Khor wrestled under 2000 River Hill graduate Brandon Lauer, who went 111-0 for his career and won three each in county, regional and state titles.
“I try to implement a lot of what Brandon did at River Hill into our program here at Forest Park. Our team really was resilient this year.” said Khor, whose assistants are Sean “Julio” Markley and Rashon Lusane. “Everyone came together to support our student athletes to have a special season. Everyone comes to our practices and works hard to achieve our goals. It truly was a team effort this year. Coach Julio, Coach Rushane and our entire school community.”
The Foresters went 13-1 in regular-season dual meets and 21-5 overall, falling to third-ranked eventual Class 1A state duals champion South Carroll in their 1A North Region. The Foresters qualified 10 wrestlers for this weekend’s Class 2A-1A North Regional Tournament at South Carroll.
Anderson is 29-5 with 13 pins and three technical falls, and Noor is 15-5 with 11 pins among the Foresters’ top record on the squad.
Anderson earned falls in 85 seconds and 3:14 to reach his title match, where he overcame Poly junior Chonan Bell by 11-10 decision. Dickerson had pins in 31 seconds and 3:50, the latter against Poly junior Collier Grace for the crown.
Noor pinned all three opponents in succession in 43 seconds, 4:42 and 2:56, the third one being junior Dashawn Hemphill of The Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE).
The runner-up Engineers had champions in 20th-ranked sophomore Miles Molina (108), juniors junior Jaden White (134) and Derrel Davis (152), freshman Connor Armwood (122),
Molina registered a 33-second pin and a 15-0 technical fall in his title match with senior Brandon Dudley of Digital Harbor, improving his record on the year to 33-1. As a 106-pound freshman, Molina won the city title and placed fourth at regions, ending with a record of 29-12 with 16 pins.
Armwood raised his record on the season to 23-2 on a 37-second pin and a 19-1 technical fall over championship rival Luis Ruano of Dunbar, whose record slipped to 29-3.
White earned a semifinal, 17-13, decision over eventual third-place finishing freshman Jamal Jenkins of Dunbar before winning his third straight city title by forfeit.
As a 120-pound freshman, White earned his initial city crown and was fourth at regions, ending the year with a mark of 24-8 that included 20 pins. As a 132-pound sophomore, White won his second city title and was fifth at regionals, posting a record of 27-12 with 22 pins.
Davis’ record on the year is 32-4 following his pins in 2:35, 3:12 and his 12-7 championship victory over Holmes, which accounted for his second city crown in three title match berths.
As a 132-pound freshman, Davis was a runner-up in the city who finished fourth at regions, ending with a record of 29-11 that included 17 pins. As a sophomore at 144 pounds, Davis once again finished fourth at regions after winning his first city crown, ending the year with a record of 20-9 that included seven pins.
Third-place ACCE crowned seniors Kenard Swinton (128) and Skie Baltimore (146) along with junior James Scott (167), with Baltimore and Scott improving their respective records to 29-5, and 22-5.
Baltimore dominated with pins in 23 and 45 seconds as well as a title-match fall in 4:39 over freshman Jebari Jenkins of Dunbar.
Scott received a forfeit before scoring a 16-1 technical fall and a title bout pin in 3:47 over Poly senior Ayden Paulay, who has won a pair of city crowns and placed third once and also placed fifth at regions.
Swinton used a 33-second pin to reach the finals, where his 18-12 decision overcame Poly sophomore Apollos Abdul-Wahhab.
Edmondson’s pair of title-winners were sophomore Corey Lawson (115) and senior Jaquai Taylor (159), with Lawson raising his record on the year to 14-2.
