Gilman wins Adam Janet Tournament

Top-ranked Gilman crowned seniors John Jurkovic (157), Emmitt Sherlock (175) and Gabriel Smith (190) along with sophomores Liam McGettigan (113) and Arthur Konschak (165) and junior Isaiah Trusty (215) toward winning their 12-team Adam Janet Tournament on Saturday.


Eighth-ranked Freshman Christian Wirts (103) and senior Sawyer Enright (144) finished second, third-ranked senior Zach Glory (132) was third, and junior Noah Lawrence (285), fourth as the Greyhounds (261.5 points) placed 10 wrestlers within the top four of their weight classes to overcome runner-up Caesar Rodney (231) of Delaware.


Fifth-ranked Griffin Stewart (150) was a champion for third place and 25th-ranked Calvert Hall (195 points), Annapolis (159 points) finished fourth after crowning sophomore Mike Groszkowski (132), and Boys’ Latin was sixth behind 12th-ranked sophomore champion Cooper Monroe (126).



Ranked No. 1 at 175 pounds by Legacy Wrestling, Sherlock is after his third straight titles in both the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association’s A Conference and the Maryland Private Schools State tournaments.


Sherlock is among six returning MIAA tournament and/or state placewinning teammates.


The top-ranked McGettigan was first at MIAAs and states and finished third at National Preps last season. Second-ranked Smith was second at MIAAs and first at states. Top-ranked Jurkovic was second at MIAAs and states. Glory was third and third, Konschak was second and fifth, and Vasser, fourth and fourth.


Ranked seventh nationally, Sherlock pinned all five opponents comprising falls in 20, 27, 32, 33 and 61 seconds to improve his record on the year to 20-3. Smith went 5-0 with four pins and a technical fall, rising to 14-2 on the year.


McGettigan went 5-0 with a pin and four technical falls as his record rose to 11-3. Konschak was 5-0 with three pins, a technical fall and a major decision, improving his season record to 16-4. Jurkovic went 4-0 with three pins and a technical fall, raising his record on the year to 12-5.


“I think our team is in a great position heading into the heart of the season. I’m especially proud of our younger wrestlers, like Christian, Arthur and Isiah,” Jurkovic said. “They’ve been stepping up recently and winning some of those tough matches. Their contributions are key for our team to win MIAA and private schools titles again this year.”

Trusty has an overall record of 5-0 for the season after pinning all four opponents, including a 78-second fall against Calvert Hall senior third-place MIAA finisher Maxwell Garland.


“We have been working very hard as a team this year, and I’m excited to see how the rest of the season plays out,” Jurkovic said. “It feels very rewarding to see our hard work paying off for many of our guys at the Adam Janet tournament this weekend.”


Griffin went 4-0 with a 27-second pin, a pair of 19-4 technical falls and another by the score of 17-2.


Groszkowski went 5-0, including falls in 22, 31 and 72 seconds, raising his record to 16-0 with 13 first-period pins. Groszkowski also had an 11-4 decision over Glory and a 20-11 major decision over Delaware state champion Tye Bellarin, a junior from Red Lion Christian Academy.


Monroe went 5-0, including falls in 20 seconds and 3:53, a 19-3 technical fall and a 12-2 major decision.
