HD Woodson wins DCIAA Championships

HD Woodson walked into the Dunbar High School Gymnasium last Saturday as the only public-school team in the Washington D.C. top five. They backed that No. 3 ranking up on the mat as they outpaced second-place Jackson-Reed, 202-156 at the DCIAA Championships. The DCIAA is the equivalent of Maryland’s MPSSAA Organization that oversees public school athletics.

Six champions powered that divide with two of them being top rated in D.C., Ahmar Davis (215) and Randal Ayaba (285). No. 5 Maurice Owens rose atop the heap at 120, with three unranked teammates joining him in the winner’s circle, Brian Carter (126), Mahrzell Sampson (175), and a unique weight at 335lbs being won by Kevin Price.

All six used pins to pick up their triumphs. The fastest was clocked by Owens in 44 seconds versus Johnson Lopez (Bell). Sampson, who was previously ranked but removed due to inactivity, rang up Roosevelt’s Lyndon Huges with 18 seconds left in the first, 1:42. Price lasted two more seconds than Sampson, logging his fall at the 1:44 mark over Antonio Hawkins (Ballou).

The others dropped their foes in the middle round. Davis and Carter both timed out at 3:01, Davis over Dunbar’s Karon McDonald and Carter with Leonardo Torres Rivas (Jackson-Reed). Ayaba waited until there were eight seconds left to turn the lights out on a No.1 versus No. 2 showdown with Bell’s Jose Garcia, 3:52.

Collecting silver for HD were, Darrell Turner (138), Bernard Brooks (150), and No. 1 Caleb Davis (190). Earning bronze were Aamyiah Tyler (106), Jordan Jacobs (132), and Taraji Willis (165). Landing in fourth were Davion Dorsey (113) and Aarieon Sampson (144).

Jackson-Reed locked down three titles by three ranked wrestlers, No. 2 Nikita Andrews (132), Noah Flemons (138, ranked 3rd at 150), and No. 1 Alex Ouzts (165). Like HD Woodson, all the champs pulled off pins in the finals. Andrews dropped Davien Parks (Anacostia) in the second period, 2:21.

Flemons thought about going the distance with Turner but changed his mind midway through the final frame and stuck his counterpart in 4:48. Ouzts is one of D.C.’s best and even owns a win over Maryland’s No. 14 Haden Myers of St. Paul’s. The junior had the quickest ending amongst his team’s finalists with a 1:17 fall of Naoud Samuel (Roosevelt).

Placing second for Jackson-Reed were, No. 2 Spencer Jones (106), Mekedim Gossaye (113), Torres Rivas, and Maxwell Tatton (157, No. 2 at 165). Their other placers earned bronze, De-Anthony Joyner (144), Ben Betters (175), and Cyrus Parta (190).

Bell Multicultural’s third-place finish was boosted by three champions, who are interestingly all ranked fourth in D.C. at their weights, Erick Perdomo (106), Jasson Lopez (144), and Kavon Hill (157).

Perdomo had an easy time upsetting Jones, piling up a 16-4 major-decision. Hill also defeated a No. 2 ranked grappler in Tatton, who he flattened in the first period, 1:21. Lopez used a first period pin, 1:17, of Ballou’s Chauncey Hawkins for his glory.

Johnson Lopez and Garcia were Bell’s silver medalists. Securing bronze were Alanis Pineda (113) and Gerardo Romero (138). Placing fourth were Diogo Penayo (132), Antonio Vargas (150), Amadeo Castilon (190), Jonathan Galeas (215), and Edwin Argueta (335).

Fourth place Dunbar had one champ as did Roosevelt (5th) and Anacostia (6th).

Dunbar’s Nicolas Candelas edged Gossaye, 9-8, at 113. Carlos Cardenas claimed Roosevelt’s top spot with an 11-2 major decision versus Brooks. Anacostia’s Malachi Hill is another wrestler who would have been ranked but we haven’t saw him wrestling. With his upset of No. 1 Davis at 215, he will be back in this week after pinning his rival in 4:26.

This coming weekend will provide all the clarity we need as the final pecking order for all the District’s teams will be settled at the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA) Tournament that mixes the private schools with the public. This tournament is also the de facto National Prep Qualifier for the private school teams. Only the top finisher (no matter the placing) advances automatically to Lehigh as the D.C. teams only have one guaranteed spot per weight.
