Seventh-ranked senior Alex DeVriendt (144), 16th-ranked junior Carter Canale (175) and sophomore Calvin Smith (120) were three title-winners among seven finalists and 11 wrestlers who finished within the top four of their weight classes as seventh-ranked Middletown repeated as champion of the Frederick County Tournament at Thomas Johnson on Saturday.

Having finished third once and second twice at the Class 2A-1A state tournament, DeVriendt scored a 16-1 semifinal victory over 14th-ranked sophomore Cash Wheat of Linganore before winning his title match, 10-0, over 13th-ranked senior Chase Wheeler of Tuscarora.

DeVriendt improved to 40-2, and Canale to 37-3 as the Knights overcame the second-place Linganore Lancers, 192.5 to 129.

Runners-up for the Knights were 21st-ranked sophomore Liam Soe (113), 20th-ranked freshman Ryker Keeney (126), 22nd-ranked senior Henry Graham (157) and senior Dasean Butts (215), with third placements from 18th-ranked freshman Zach Landis (165) and seniors Arturo Majarrez-Zepata (150) and Gerald Hayden Smith (190), and a fourth-place effort from freshmen Samuel Sword (138).

Winning titles for the 12th-ranked Lancers were sixth-ranked senior Josh Arthur (113) and seventh-ranked senior Brennan Considine (126).

Considine is a returning Class 4A-3A state champion who improved to 38-1. Arthur improved to 32-3 with his second straight county title, has earned one regional crown in two title match appearances, and placed second and third at the past two Class 4A-3A state tournaments.

Third-place, 37th-ranked Walkersville crowned 22nd-ranked Jack Birth (157), who improved to 28-0 with a championship bout fall in 3:15 over Graham, formerly a 165-pounder.

Finishing fourth was 11th-ranked Brunswick with champions in second-ranked junior Seth Crawford (138), 15th-ranked senior Evan Mullen (106) and 17th-ranked junior Lane Riggelman (285).

Crawford improved to 39-3 with his second consecutive crown, Mullen is 39-5 and improved on last year’s runner-up finish, and Riggleman is 40-3 after being fourth at counties last season.

Frederick crowned 12th-ranked sophomore Victor Guerra (150) and 15th-ranked junior Ian Tumi (165).

While Guerra improved his record on the year to 31-4, Tumi improved on last year’s third-place finish and raised his record on the year to 34-1 with an upset, 4-2, championship victory that dethroned Linganore’s fifth-ranked senior Peyton Pickett.

Pickett slipped to 36-4, having placed as high as third and first at counties, second and third at regions, and third at states.

Urbana’s fifth-ranked senior Vince Corso (190) improved his record on the year to 39-1 with his fourth straight county title, having placed fourth at both regions and Class 4A-3A states.

Tuscarora senior Cooper Cammarata (132) is a 10th-ranked repeat champion whose record improved to 40-3, and Thomas Johnson’s Brendan Hubbard (215) ran his record to 41-0, improving on last year’s runner-up finish.
