Four Maryland Girls made noise at the National Prep Tournament last weekend at the Stabler Arena on the campus of Lehigh University.
Two shined in the same weight class as national and Maryland No. 1 Taina Fernandez secured her second National Prep title with a 57 second fall over fellow Marylander, Kesi Tsarni (Bullis) at 132lbs.
Fernandez is ranked at 135 in both sets of rankings. The National Prep Tournament weights differentiate slightly from the norm. Fernandez pinned her other three foes in the first frame. Izzy Kittredge (Greens Farms Academy, CT) was dispersed of in 26 seconds.
In the quarters, Cindy Lin of the Episcopal School of Dallas was discarded in 40 seconds. Morgan Gibson (Nobles, MA) kept Fernandez on the mat longer than anyone else in the semis before succumbing to a fall in 1:00.
Tsarni, who is no longer ranked nationally by USA Wrestling, shocked No. 3 at 135, Corynne McNulty (Wyoming Seminary, PA), 5-3, in her semifinal. Tasha Bohorad (Phillips Academy, MA) was decked in the opening period of the quarters in 1:16.
Fernandez’s teammate, Summer Mutschler is No. 1 in Maryland at 105 and No. 10 in the nation. Mutschler came in fourth at 107lbs with a consolation final loss to Lily Runez (Choate Rosemary Hall, CT), 8-5. Mutschler’s other loss came to the country’s No. 2 110lber, Kayla Batres (Greens Farms Academy), 16-0, in the semis.
Mutschler picked off No. 17 (at 105), Maya Alvarado (Lake Highland Prep, FL) with a 1:19 fall in the quarters. Lilian Turpen of Pennsylvania’s Kiski School was vanquished with a 38 second pin in the consolation semis.
Good Counsel’s No. 1 Bella Sowards was third here last year and ended in fourth at 126lbs this time around. In the third-place match, Sowards encountered No. 12 at 125, Sara McLaughlin (Choate Rosemary Hall), and came up short, 9-0. Sowards’ second loss came in the semis to No. 2 Emma Bacon (Wyoming Seminary), by fall, 1:46.
Sowards three wins came on pins with round of 16 opponent, Danielle Choi (St. Paul’s School, NH) being dropped in 38 seconds, and consolation semi adversary, Elizabeth Duda (Lawrenceville School, NJ) being planted in 42 seconds. Virginia’s Autumn Smith (Norfolk Christian School) almost made it the distance before getting her lights turned off at the 5:46 mark.
Spalding was seventh in a team race won by Wyoming Seminary with Blair Academy in second.
