Maryland had nine wrestlers reach the podium in the boys’ brackets at last weekend's NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach. Spread out over four divisions, Maryland shined the most in the senior division with four All-Americans. There were also three sophomores and one freshman and one junior, that earned All-American statuses.
Five of the nine reached the finals with only one of them completing the journey to the top of the podium, Bullis’ top rated 165lber Salah Tsarni. Tsarni, who is ranked 10th in the country by High School on SI, won his second straight private school state title this year.
The sophomore improved upon his finish at every top tournament from the year before. At Ray Oliver, Tsarni was third as a freshman and second this year. The Bulldog failed to place at Beast of the East a year ago and finished as a runner-up this year to No. 7 in the nation Claudio Torres (Lake Highland Prep, FL). Tsarni was also second at National Preps to Torres a year after placing seventh.
At last year’s NHSCA Freshman Nationals, Tsarni fell in the finals to Lake Highland’s Lucas Boe (No. 7 at 157 in SI’s national ratings). There would be no falling short this year as the Sophomore 170lb crown was obtained with a 5-1 decision of Texas’ Steel Meyers (Allen). Meyers did not compete in his state tournament due to injury. A season ago, Meyers was taking to the mats for Trinity Christian Academy and placed sixth at National Preps.
In the semis, Tsarni downed another Texan, Sean Perez Jr. (Humble), 24-9, who was third in the 6A state tournament. The quarters saw Tsarni post yet another tech fall, 19-4, over California’s Christian Stoeber (Fountain Valley), who lost in the blood round of California’s single class state tournament. Tech falls were Tsarni’s method of victory at NHSCAs as he used three more of them in the early rounds to propel his title run.
“It feels good, but this is just one step,” Tsarni said. “I’ve been putting in the work every day, and this just shows it’s paying off. I'm grateful and now I am getting ready for World Team Trials in Vegas. Last year taught me what I needed to fix. I didn’t see second as a loss. It showed me exactly what I needed to work on, which was being more fundamental and aggressive during the beginning of the match. So, I went back to the room and worked on it with my coaches. And I came back feeling twice as good as I was last year.”
Tsarni’s teammate and classmate at Bullis, No. 1 Noah Tucker (157) earned his second consecutive third place finish at NHSCAs. Tucker, a two-time state placer who was fourth at National Preps this year, competed at 160lbs and beat Pennsylvania’s Jon Smith (Oxford Area), 4-1, in the consolation finals. Smith was fourth in the AAA states.
Two more wrestlers just on the outside of the national rankings would fall to Tucker in the consolation rounds, including Wyoming Seminary’s Jack Chamberlain (5th at 165 at NPs), 7-2, and New Jersey’s Joey Monticello (Don Bosco Prep), 4-1. Monticello did not finish the season but won the East Coast Catholic Classic crown over New Jersey state placer Trevor Jones of Delbarton. Tucker’s only blemish came in the quarters versus Florida’s state runner-up, Kyle Gallo (Zephyrhills Christian), 7-5, who went on to place second.
The final sophomore to reach the awards stand did so in the number two position as No. 1 in Maryland and national Honorable Mention, Eli Gabrielson (South Carroll) barely came up short in the finals against Nevada’s honorable mention Abraham Coronado of McQueen. The match went into the tiebreaker rounds with Coronado escaping and Gabrielson not being able to answer him back, falling, 7-6 TB2, in a battle of state champions.
Montana’s two-time state champion, Cael Floerchinger (Great Falls), was the Cavaliers’ semifinal victim, succumbing to a 14-6 major decision. In the quarters, South Dakota’s Brendon Oehme (Brandon Valley) was decked in the first period, 1:14. Oehme was second at states a year after striking gold. Two major decisions and a pin were mixed in with Gabrielson’s early round matches that also included his closest win of the tournament, 10-7, over North Carolina’s 4A state champ, Aiden White (Weddington).
Stephen Decatur’s three-time state champion, Elijah Collick (No. 2 at 126 in MD), dropped down to 120lbs and reached the junior finals before coming up short against another wrestler coming down in weight. Although Joesph Uhorchuk (Signal Mountain, TN) did compete at 120lbs earlier in the season, he won his third state championship at 132lbs, where he is ranked seventh in the nation.
Uhorchuk used a 12-1 major over Collick to claim his third NHSCA crown. Collick, now a two-time NHSCA placer, surprised national honorable mention, Lander Bosh of Layton, Utah with a 10-4 decision of the state champ in the semis. In the quarters, Collick stuck Nick Desisto (Tewksbury, MA), a second-place finisher at states and New England Championships, in the third, 5:09. Three tech falls preceded those bouts.
“Reaching the finals I felt was expected with the amount of training I put in,” said Collick confidently. “Beating Bosh was exciting. He was getting frustrated in the match. His hand fighting was clubs out of that frustration, and he even threw my headgear off the mat in the middle of the match. I kept my composure and kept scoring. It helped me gauge where I’m at with wrestling, mentally, and also helped me see some flaws I have that I can fix. “
Two of the four seniors that placed reached the finals, and both are ranked No. 1 in Maryland, Boonsboro’s Tanner Halling (132) and St. Mary’s Ryken’s Evan Boblits (150). Boblits is also currently ranked 29th in the country at 150lbs.
Halling placed sixth as a sophomore at NHSCAs and was eight last year. The two-time state champion edged Georgia’s three-time 4A Champ, Olli Webb (Southeast Whitfield), 3-2, to reach the finals. Halling’s biggest win came in the quarters when he upset California’s Paulo Valdez (Hesperia, No. 29 at 120), 11-0. Valdez is a three-time state placer. Two techs and a pin came before the win over Valdez.
Halling’s 126lb finals opponent, Musa Tamaradze (No. 22 at 132), hails from Massachusetts but wrestled at the New York Military Academy this year where he was third at National Preps. Tamaradze authored a 9-3 decision of Halling to earn his second NHSCA title in a row.
“I just carried my momentum from this season I had over to the tournament,” Halling said. “The only thing that crossed my mind was pushing the pace and continuing to score. I didn’t know Valdez was ranked in the country, he couldn’t handle my attack rate and ultimately that’s what allowed me to (win) 11-0 (versus) a good guy like that."
“I was super excited to make the finals, more than anything in my life. NHSCAs is the tournament I always look forward to the most and the tournament that I train for. To run through the tough side of that bracket says a lot about where I’m at and how much I’ve grown. I was super proud of myself for gutting that match out in the semis.”
Boblits, a two-time private school state champion, was third at National Preps this year and a three-time placer overall. The Knight had previously beaten his finals foe from Ohio, Holden Huhn (La Salle), a fourth-place state finisher, 4-2, at Escape the Rock. This time the outcome would go the other way as Huhn was declared the victor, 2-1, on a technical violation near the end of regulation.
“They said it was an illegal headlock hold and that I didn’t have an arm in the front headlock,” Boblits explained. “We tried to challenge it because you can obviously see in the video that it wasn’t illegal, but the video wasn’t working because the service in the building was bad.”
Three pins, two of them in 35 and 36 seconds, were accrued in Boblits’ first three bouts before he finally went the distance with another Ohioan, Denis Kodakov Gil (Spire Academy), 7-0. Gil did not compete in the states and only had a 10-4 record listed for the season. In the semis, two-time Texas state champion, Nicholas Zamora (Arlington Martin), fell 13-7. Boblits had never placed at the NHSCA Nationals prior to this excursion.
“I definitely think I could have performed better in the finals, and obviously I knew it would be a good match as it was a rematch against someone I beat earlier this year,” offered Boblits. “Overall, I feel like I performed very well, more free and open than usual for me. It definitely sucked that I couldn’t win being my senior year, but my high school career is over now and I’m onto better things.”
Bowie’s Jamil Morrow was upset in the state finals in his bid to repeat as 4A/3A champ but shrugged that off to earn his second seventh place finish in the last two years. In his placement match, Morrow overwhelmed Benjahmin Wilcox (Woonsocket, RI), a state runner-up who was fourth in New England, 15-4.
Southwest Miami’s state champ, Myron Mendez, who is a honorable mention entry at 215, posted an 11-3 major decision of Morrow in the consolation semis. In the match prior to that one, Morrow got the best of a different Florida grappler, three-time state placer and state runner-up, Nathan Chen (Pine Crest), 4-3. A quarter final loss came at the hands of Delaware state champion, Patrick Donahue (Cape Henlopen), by fall, 3:25.
Saint Frances Academy had two wrestlers work their way through the brackets to place, senior Elijah Josey (No. 3 at 190) and freshman Evan Smith-Matlock (No. 23 at 285).
Josey placed third at states and came in fourth at 182lbs here after losing to Rhode Island’s No. 27 nationally, Isael Perez, who competed for the New York Military Academy this season, 5-4. Josey earned his No. 25 national rating by beating Perez, 5-4, at National Preps en route to a sixth-place finish (Perez was 8th).
“Coming to Saint Frances paid off huge for my wrestling,” remarked Josey. “All year I was able to compete against some of the best guys in the country. I never thought I could be an All-American until this year. I never beat Perez in my career until Preps then I beat him. Coach told me to push myself and go 182 for NHSCA. I was right in the thick of it the whole way and to place fourth is a huge accomplishment for me”
After dropping a quarter final match, 5-1, to the eventual champion from Alabama, Cody Kirk (Pike Road School), a two-time state champ, Josey defeated two National Prep Tournament grapplers, Jay Eversole (Lakeway Christian Academy, TN) and Tyler Neiva (Greens Farms Academy, CT). Eversole, who did not place at preps, was handed a 4-2 loss. Neiva, who was sixth at 165, was dispatched with a 7-1 tally.
Smith-Matlock followed up his sixth-place finish at states by placing sixth here. Two pins pushed him into the semis where he would tumble to his fate with three straight losses. All but one of those losses were close with a 1-0 result in the semis versus Pennsylvania’s Hayes Henry (Central Mountain), who did not place at states. Will Thomas (Woodland, Cartersville) did not qualify for the Georgia state tournament but handled the Panther, 4-1, in the consolation semis. The fifth-place match saw Smith-Matlock get flattened in 50 seconds by Massachusetts’ Nerivaldo DaTrinidade Jr. (Greater Lawrence, MA).
“This year was a big transition from junior league to high school,” reflected Smith, who was a junior league state runner-up last year. “Almost everyone I wrestled this year was a junior or senior, but I feel like I wrestled everyone pretty tough. Wrestling guys my own age I felt very confident and, in the future, I believe I can be one of the best heavyweights in the state.”
Two Marylanders reached the blood round before bailing out, Bullis’ freshman Soshiant Ahanj-Elias (138, No. 9 at 144 in MD) and No. 9 Joao Guerra (215/220), a senior from Winston Churchill.
Four juniors came within two matches of placing, No. 3 Eli Chesla (Archbishop Spalding, 113), No. 2 Jayden Jackson (Loyola-Blakefield, 120), No. 1 Zane Leitzel (Archbishop Spalding, 138), and No. 5 Evan Gavin (St. Mary’s Ryken, 220). Perry Hall’s No. 1 in Maryland and No. 25 nationally at 175lbs, Victor Marks-Jenkins tried his hand at the 182lb weight class and the two-time state champ had a rough time, posting a 2-2 record with no notable results.
