NHSCA Nationals -- Maryland Middle School All Stars!

At last weekend’s NHSCA Nationals in Virginia Beach, Maryland had four middle school grapplers make their way to the awards stand, Raymond Causey (2nd at 127), Logan Brickley (3rd at 80lbs), Braidyn Taby (4th at 95), and Quin Regnier (6th at 135lbs).

Causey came close to winning it all before falling short in overtime, 4-1, versus Virginia’s Adrian Canales. Causey pinned his semifinal opponent, California’s Rasik Garvey in 3:50. The closest match Causey won came in the quarterfinals, 6-0, over Alexander Depratti (CT).

Two of Causey’s three earlier wins came on falls in less than a minute, 33 seconds versus Jonel Cruz (MA) and 58 seconds against Virginia’s Ryan Silvey. The third came on an 18-1 technical fall of Georgia’s Benjamin Barlow.

Brickley was tripped up in the quarters by Connecticut’s Noah Blair, 10-3 and rebounded to reach the third-place match where he encountered Blair again, this time coming out ahead of his rival, with an 11-1 major decision. A 53 second pin of Liam Ivatts (MA) and a 16-0 tech of Georgia’s Ian Walker moved Brickley into that quarter final slot.

Once in the consolation bracket, Brickley posted two quick pins and a 6-0 decision over Charlie Atkinson (CT) to advance to the consolation final. The falls came in 26 seconds over Adam Gordy of Virginia and 41 seconds against Maine’s Evan McMann.

Taby had two interesting sections of results for his endeavors. The first being the opening three bouts where Taby posted three pins, Oliver Delaney (AK), :33, Dominic Simpson (TN), :29, and Cayden Clark (VA), 2:47.

The second section was the rest of his matches that ended scoreless for whoever lost. In the quarters, Taby experienced a shutout loss to the eventual champ, Florida’s Lucas Layne, 6-0. Taby was in the win column for the next three blankings, 17-0 over Jackson Bowman (GA), 3-0 versus John Tarantino (NJ), and another tech, 16-0 with another New Jersey wrestler, Ryan Blewett. The day ended with Taby receiving a 3-0 loss from North Carolina’s Carson Raper in the consolation final.

Regnier fell to Pennsylvania’s Micah Engelman, 16-7, in his fifth-place match. Prior to that, he lost to the third-place finisher New Jersey’s Amir Perry by tech, 17-1. Regnier’s other two consolation matches resulted in a 4-1 win over Holden Kopari (ND) and sticking Eli Glover of New Jersey in 41 seconds.

Regnier’s run to the quarters was pathed by a 2-1 decision of New Jersey’s Xavier Gusfa, and two consecutive 13-9 tallies versus Daniel Sheehan (NH) and Jaxon Arfaras (FL).

Pennsylvania’s Chase Booker, who finished fourth, decked Regnier in 3:26 of their quarter final meeting to drop him into the consolation bracket.
