Catonsville crowned a pair of freshmen Class 4A-3A North Region title winners in Owen Shelley (113) and Drew Eveleth (120) last Saturday at Edgewood High, each of whom improved on the previous weekend’s runner-up finishes in the Baltimore County Tournament.

Shelley rose to 30-3 on the year following a 96-second pin and another at the 3:00 mark of his semifinal before dominating his title match by 17-0 technical fall over Kenwood sophomore Robert Richter, who was fourth in the Baltimore County Tournament.

Eveleth is 24-3 following his 18-2 technical fall, a pin in 88 seconds and a pin in 5:08 over Dulaney senior Gavin Hess, a fourth-place finisher at counties against whom Eveleth has a record of 4-0.

“I knew it was going to be a tough finals match because it was the fourth time I had wrestled Hess,” Eveleth said. “I wanted to build off of the second place finish I had at counties. I felt that if I wrestled up to my abilities, I could win the regionals.”

Eveleth is competing in the same weight as his older brother, Toby, did as a senior last year, when he finished first at counties and regions and placed fifth at states.

Toby Eveleth missed counties as a junior due to an illness after having been a county runner-up and regional champion as a sophomore.

Drew and Toby are the nephews of the late Matthew Tobey Eveleth, a four-time Class 4A-3A state finalist and three-time champion for Chesapeake-Anne Arundel High whose initials, "MTE," are tattooed on Toby's right biceps.

Matt Eveleth was 37 when he died of pancreatic cancer in July 2021 as the most accomplished wrestler in the history of Chesapeake High.

Perry Hall’s top-ranked Victor Marks-Jenkins (175) and second-ranked Stone Yuen (132) and Isaac Ogunlade (215) both of Einstein are a trio of senior defending Class 4A-3A state champions who dominated their weight classes for their regional titles.

Marks-Jenkins remained true to his pattern of making quick work of his opposition, scoring a pins in 66- and 85 seconds before winning his title bout by 17-2 technical fall, the latter over Franklin senior Darius Evans.

Marks-Jenkins earned his third consecutive regional crown a week after having done the same for his Baltimore County title. Marks-Jenkins won last year’s 157-pound Class 4A-3A state title after having been a runner-up as a 145-pound third-place finisher as a freshman.

At 44-0 with 31 pins and six on the season, Marks-Jenkins has suffered one career loss, with that coming in the state semifinals of his freshman season. Mark-Jenkins has a career record of 114-1 with 113 falls and 12 technical falls, including this year’s domination of wrestlers at 190 and 215 pounds this season.

As a freshman, Marks-Jenkins went 50-1 with 42 pins and four technical falls, earning county and regional titles and finishing third at the state tournament. Marks-Jenkins was a repeat county and regional champion as a sophomore, ending with his first state title and a record of 47-0 that included 40 pins and two technical falls.

Einstein also crowned Ogunlade’s 11th-ranked brother, Josh (190), also a senior.

Yuen is 36-0, having earned his third straight regional crown after having done the same as a Montgomery County champion a week earlier. Yuen is after his second state title after being a runner-up as a sophomore.

Yuen registered falls in 88 seconds and 2:44 to reach his regional title match, where he won by 21-6 technical fall over Edgewood senior Jamere Napper.

The 6-foot Isaac Ogunlade improved his record on the year to 37-2, earning his second consecutive regional title a week after doing the same at counties. Ogunlade used technical falls of 19-3 and 17-1 to reach his championship match, where he nailed down an 81-second fall against Towson senior Xavier Higginbottom.

The 5-foot-7 Josh improved his record for the season to 38-4, having placed first, second and fourth at counties and now first, fourth and sixth at regions.

Josh registered technical falls against all three opponents comprising scores of 20-2, 18-1 and 17-2, the latter in his title bout with Perry Hall senior Jordan Young.

Aberdeen crowned 14th-ranked Liam Peterson (150) and 21st-ranked Chase Lineberry (157), a pair of seniors who added regional titles to their Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference crowns of a week earlier.

Peterson rolled to a record of 26-1 on pins in 47, 66 and 49 seconds, the last one being in his title match with Perry Hall sophomore Clayton Hosier.

Lineberry’s record improved to 34-2 as consecutive technical falls of 17-0 pushed him into the finals, where scored a pin in 3:15 over 19th-ranked senior Sean Lippman of Lansdowne, a third place finisher in Baltimore County’s tournament.

Richard Montgomery’s seventh-ranked junior Isisah Womack (138) remained undefeated at 36-0 starting with a pin in 3:25, a 23-7 technical fall and another of 21-1 in his championship match with Dundalk junior Clayton Fraser, who was third in the Baltimore County tournament.

Womack had dominated his way to a Montgomery County Tournament crown a week earlier, culminating with a championship match victory by 20-3 technical fall over Magruder’s ninth-ranked defending Class 4A-3A state champion junior Neil Sharma, an earlier, 16-3, loser to Womack.

Marks-Jenkins’ teammates, junior Justin Kavanagh (144) and senior Hegan Chhantyal (106), each won regional crowns that improved on their second- and fourth-place county tournament finishes of a week earlier.

Kavanagh’s record on the year rose to 39-4 thanks to pins in all three bouts comprising those in 2:32, 2:38 and a 40-second title match fall over Franklin senior Josh Gray.

Chhantyal earned a pair of 13-6 decisions, the second in his championship bout against Dundalk sophomore Joel Verdier.

14th-ranked sophomore Conor Ruane (126) of Westminster now has a record of 40-6 after adding a regional championship to the Carroll County crown he earned the previous weekend.

Ruane’s path to the title comprised a fall in 1:51, an 8-1 decision and another by the score of 8-3 in his championship bout with Franklin senior Joe Silberman, who was a Baltimore County Tournament runner-up.

Ranked 22nd, Bel Air sophomore Owen Reilly (285) improved his record on the year to 22-1 while adding his regional crown to the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference crown he earned a week earlier.

Reilly improved on last year's third place finish, raising his record this season to 19-1 with his championship bout, 4-1 decision over Stepp, who slips to 30-4.

Reilly nailed down an 88-second pin and another in 3:49 of his semifinal bout before winning his championship match, 8-3, over Edgewood senior Miles Putney, a third-place finisher at UCBACs whose record slipped to 34-5.

A week after being a runner-up at Baltimore County’s tournament, Lansdowne junior Chase Swiger (165) improved his record on the year to 23-3 and was crowned a regional champion.

Swiger pinned all three opponents in 97 seconds, 5:55 and 73 seconds, the last coming against Dundalk senior Isaiah Robinson.
