Whitman’s top-ranked junior Soloman Randall won a clash of defending Class 4A-3A champions, 12-7, over Linganore’s seventh-ranked senior Brennan Considine in Saturday’s 126-pound Class 4A-3A West Regional title match at Quince Orchard.

Randall improved his record on the year to 38-2 with 22 pins, using 17-1 technical fall and a 79-second pin to reach the championship match against Considine, whose record slipped to 40-2.

“I had some trouble in certain positions,” said Randall, whose career record is 116-7 with 83 pins. “But I’ll be back in the room for the next few days perfecting the small things.”

Having won a pair of Montgomery County and regional titles as well as last year’s Class 4A-3A state tournament crown a year after having placed third in each as a freshman, Randall is on pace to become only the Vikings’ second repeat state champion.

Before he graduates, Randall can match three-time state champion Eren Civan, a 2007 graduate who could not compete as a senior due to a season-ending injury.

Considine has placed first twice, second once and third once in the Frederick County Tournament, first twice as well as second and third at regions, and third and first at states.

Randall and Considine could meet again at this weekend’s Class 4A-3A state tournament, to be held at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro.

“I knew all year long that I was going to have this match in the region finals. I knew it would be one of my biggest matches,” Randall said. “I just knew I had to get to my offense and stay focused, and that’s what I was able to do. I’m super excited for this weekend and excited to compete.”

Clarksburg had a pair of champions in fourth-ranked senior Owen Pelaez (150) and 10th-ranked sophomore David Dansou (120), as did Urbana in fifth-ranked senior Vince Corso (190) and 11th-ranked freshman Damian DuChez (106), and Tuscarora in 10th-ranked senior Chase Wheeler (144) and 12th-ranked senior Cooper Cammarata (132).

Pelaez is 41-0 following 15-0 technical fall, a 1-0 semifinal decision over junior Zahid Shujaee of Blake, and an 18-3 technical fall win over 12th-ranked sophomore Victor Guerra of Frederick, a county champion whose record is 33-5.

Shujaee has a record of 30-4, having finished third at regions as he did in the Montgomery County Tournament the previous weekend.

Peleaz’s effort comes a week after earning his fourth straight Montgomery County title, becoming the Coyotes’ first four-time champion and only the fifth county wrestler to ever accomplish that feat.

Pelaez also received Montgomery County’s “Richard J. Monisera Award” granted “for Achievement,” and bestowed annually upon “The Senior Wrestler who earned the most Career MCPS Tournament Points.”

The award was given last season to Pelaez's former teammate Johnathan Chang, who became the Coyotes’ first-ever state champion as a 144-pound senior.

Pelaez has placed fifth and third in the past two state tournaments and won a pair of regional titles in three championship berths, and has a Coyotes' program-leading career record of 166-14.

Dansou improved on the previous weekend’s sixth-place finish at counties, doing so via 19-3 technical fall, a 5-1 semifinal decision and a 10-7 championship victory over junior Brody Matson, who was third in Montgomery County.

Corso ran his record on the season to 42-1 following consecutive technical falls of 19-3 and 18-0 before nailing down a 63-second championship fall over Blake senior James Zimmerman, a Montgomery County Tournament runner-up.

A week earlier, Corso had won his fourth straight Frederick County title, having also placed fourth at both regions and Class 4A-3A states.

After finishing second at counties, DuChez improved his season mark to 38-3 after winning his regional title.

DuChez earned a 19-4 technical fall, a 15-4 semifinal major decision and a 3-2 title match triumph over 13th-ranked Oakdale freshman Paul Fitzpatrick, who was third in Frederick County.

Cammarata’s record is 43-3 after adding his regional crown to the Frederick County title he earned a week earlier, while Wheeler improved his season mark to 43-4 after being a runner-up the previous weekend.

Cammarata earned a 17-1 technical fall, a 12-6 semifinal victory and a 10-1 major decision over 13th-ranked senior Jimmy Messer of Magruder, a Montgomery County runner-up whose record is now 32-5.

Wheeler had a fall in 3:55, a 9-6 semifinal decision, and a pin in 3:33 of his championship match with Whitman junior Matthew Hobbs, a third-place county finisher whose record is 36-5.

Wheeler’s semifinal win was against Linganore’s 12th-ranked junior Cash Wheat, who was fourth in Frederick County.

Magruder’s nineth-ranked senior Neil Sharma (138) is a defending Class 4A-3A state champion who was dethroned last week following his second loss of the year to seventh-ranked junior Isisah Womack of Richard Montgomery.

Sharma rebounded by improving his record on the year to 35-2 comprising consecutive technical falls of 16-1 and 15-0 to go with his 15-2 championship match victory over 24th-ranked junior Chris Lindstrom of Walt Whitman, who was fourth at counties.

Linganore’s sixth-ranked senior Josh Arthur (113) improved to 38-3, winning his second straight regional title a week after doing the same by earning the Frederick County crown.

Having placed second and third at the past two Class 4A-3A state tournaments, Arthur used a 16-0 technical fall and a 6-4 semifinal victory over eighth-ranked Isiaiah Brewster to reach his title bout, where pinned Whitman’s seventh-ranked sophomore Jabasie Trice.

A Montgomery County champion whose record slipped to 37-4, Trice has split bouts with Brewster, who finished third at regions a week after doing the same in the Montgomery County Tournament.

Fifth-ranked junior Ian Tumi (165) of Frederick added his regional crown to his Frederick County title from a week earlier, and he did it by once again defeating sixth-ranked senior Peyton Pickett of Linganore.

Tumi has a record of 37-1 following his 63-second fall, a 14-5 semifinal decision and a 2-1 triumph for his second straight win over Pickett, who slipped to 38-5 after having placed as high as third and first at counties, second and third at regions, and third at states.

Other title-winners were 15th-ranked junior Nayenecke Ituka (285) of Gaithersburg, 16th-ranked freshman Logan Brown (157) of Northwest, 19th-ranked senior Joao Guerrera (215) and junior Ziya Khozhugov (175), with Ituka, Brown and Guerra rebounding from their runner-up finishes in the Montgomery County Tournament.

Ituka has a record of 20-3 following consecutive decisions of 7-2, 4-1, and 10-3, the latter against Thomas Johnson senior Amani Opon, who was third in Frederick County.

Brown improved his record on the year to 38-3 after winning by 18-3 technical fall, a pin in 2:15 and a 10-1 title match major decision over Quince Orchard senior Gavin Hill, who was third in Montgomery County.

Brown’s fall in 2:15 was against Oakdale junior Marty Sandy, who finished third in the region after also being third in Frederick County.

Guerra’s record on the season is 39-2 after winning by pin in 2:47, his 14-7 semifinal decision, and his wild, 23-21 title match win over 21st-ranked Thomas Johnson senior Brendan Hubbard, a Frederick County champion whose record slipped to 43-1.

A sixth-place finisher in the Montgomery County tournament, Khozhu became a champion after a fall in 3:35, a 13-9 semifinal decision and an 8-2 championship bout victory over Sherwood senior Brenden Heyer, who was third in Montgomery County.
