RESULTS: MSWA @ Spalding (19U Edition)

Last Sunday, April 13th, the MSWA held their second Freestyle and Greco Roman Open Tournaments at Archbishop Spalding. The third and final open is slated for this weekend (April 19th) at Queen Anne’s High School. These culminate in the Freco state tournament at Loyola-Blakefield on May 17th.

This recap will focus on the 19U Boys’ exploits. There were some Team Trials matches held in conjunction with the Open portion. Some wrestlers were unattached, some represented clubs, for consistency, we will use their high school if it is known.

In the Freestyle Team Trials at 122lbs, Loyola’s No. 2 Jayden Jackson won by technical fall over Broadneck’s Miguel E. Caban. Both wrestler’s defeated St. Mary’s Ryken’s Becket Geary (No. 13 at 113). Jackson by fall in 2:11 and Caban by tech, 22-10.

Hereford’s No. 11 Adam Keever used a 15-2 tech of Potomac’s No. 24 Julien Reyes to claim the 192 TT spot. No. 5 at 190, George Tate (Good Counsel) won a wild 15-12 bout with No. 5 at 215, Evan Gavin (St. Mary’s Ryken) to earn the 217lb position.

The TT Greco Roman matches saw some rematches from the FS portion, with the same victor in all. Keever teched Reyes, 8-0. Tate won a 13-8 decision with Gavin. Jackson’s match with Geary was for first place this time and ended with a 20-12 tech for Jackson.

In the Open FS brackets, Keever won the 190lb title with successive wins, 7-6 and 8-4, over Zachary Richards (Southern Maryland Wrestling Club). Geary won the 126lb gold with a 12-2 tech over Mason Ferrell (Lake Forrest, DE). Caban gained the 120lb title on a forfeit from Sparrows Point’s Brandon Wunder (No. 7 at 113).

For some odd reasons, both Gavin and Tate decided to skip a match with No. 1 Victor Marks-Jenkins (Perry Hall) leaving Marks-Jenkins the winner by forfeit at 215.

Two from the host school won crowns, Ryder Kolat (157) and Josh Taylor (175). Kolat, who ended the year ranked 9th at 150, beat Calvert Hall’s Griffin Stewart (No. 5 at 150), 11-10, and pinned ACCE’s Skie-Palmer Baltimore, 1:22, in round robin matches. Taylor’s big win for his title came over South River’s Evan Paximadas, 11-0. Taylor is ranked 21st at 165.

Two of Saint Frances Academy's finest claimed top honors, Noah Shird (144) and Chase Carpintieri (165). Shird was ranked prior to a season ending injury and validated his pervious status with a 14-12 decision of McDonogh’s Mason Comegys (No. 6 at 132). Carpintieri, No. 6 at 157, teched Noah Knox (Avon Grove, PA), 10-0.

The No. 15 heavyweight in the state, Bel Air’s Owen Reilly, decked Spalding’s Luke Barulli (No. 17 at 215), 2:58, for the 285lb gold. Walt Whitman’s Solomon Randall (No. 4 at 126) won the 132-138 bracket over his high school mate, Adan Magnas, by tech, 26-15.

The 106-113 gold was taken home by South River’s Shaams Gambhir after issuing a 10-0 tech fall to Winters Mill’s Christina Padilla (No. 10 at 110lbs in the girls’ rankings). Potomac’s Cyrus Felton claimed the 150lb title over Hammond’s Connor McGovern, 12-1 and by fall, 3:53.

The Greco portion included just two double champs, Randall and Marks-Jenkins. Randall again defeated Magnas, 13-5, at 132-138. Marks-Jenkins, who is ranked 25th in the country by High School on SI, teched Keever, 8-0, and C. Milton Wright’s Aaron Moccia, 10-0, at 190lbs. Keever beat Moccia (No. 12 at 175), 15-5. Joining Marks-Jenkins as champs for Perry Hall was Marcus Saxby who authored a 10-0 tech of Quince Orchard’s Ryan Frost at 165-175.

Wrestlers who were second in FS that placed first in GR were Wunder, Comegys, and Barulli. Wunder teched Caban, 9-0, and Geary, 8-0, at 120-126. Comegys (144) put an 8-0 tech up of Leonardtown’s Will Colson. Barulli teched (8-0) and pinned (35 seconds) Landon’s Jason Hinton at 285.

Stewart took out two state ranked grapplers for the 157lb crown, Arundel’s Matteo Brown (No. 12 at 150), 10-1, and Linganore’s Cash Wheat (No. 21 at 144), 10-0. Reyes won the 215lb weight class 8-5 over Sergio Ramos (Unattached).
