South Carroll, Spalding, & Gilman Stand High

Top-ranked sophomore Class 2A-1A state champion JoJo Gigliotti (138) and third-ranked junior state runner-up Evan Owen (126/132) were among six South Carroll wrestlers who went undefeated at last weekend’s Friars’ Duals at Archbishop Curley.

Gigliotti went 8-0 with seven pins and was named the Outstanding Lowerweight, and Owen pinned six of eight opponents as the Cavaliers beat the Friars, 50-25, in the championship match.

Also wrestling well for the 19th-ranked Cavaliers were freshmen Brody Henry (126/132) and Dave Snyder (144), sophomore Landon Hamper (165), and junior Angelo Marchany (150).

Marchaney went 8-0 with seven pins, Snyder was 8-0 with six pins, Hamper was 8-0 with five pins, and Henry, 8-0 with four pins.

The Friars were led by juniors Scott Anderson (175), Dylan Fish (165) and Kahlil Regan (285), sophomores Bailen Boutz (190) and Adeoluwa Adewuyi (157), seniors Carlos Rodriguez (138) and Brandon Lewis (215) and freshman Oscar Davis (132).

The Friars are coached by Paul Boettcher, a 1999 Archbishop Curley graduate. Boettcher earned crowns in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and private schools state tournaments as well as All-American honors – the latter by placing fourth at the National High School championships at Pittsburgh’s Duquesne University.

A transfer from Northeast-Anne Arundel who placed third at regions and fifth at the Class 2A-1A state tournament, Anderson won all seven bouts to improve his overall record to 21-2.

Anderson pinned South Carroll's sixth-place Class 2A-1A state finisher Anthony Rodrigues and was named the tournament's Outstanding Upperweight.

"Scott has some wins over a handful of ranked opponents this year," Boettcher said. "Scott took his time setting up Rodrigues, used a nice lateral drop and pinned him.”

Boutz won six of seven bouts to improve to 29-3 on the year and is a winner of the Kent Holiday Tournament who "pinned his way through the Loch Raven Duals," Boettcher said.

Regan and Lewis went unbeaten as well. Regan went 7-0 to improve his overall record to 27-3, and Lewis was 6-0, raising his record on the year to 23-3.

"Kahlil is an undersized 285-pounder walking around at 195, and Brandon has gotten a lot better since last year," Boettcher said. "Brandon Went undefeated to win the Raider Duals, Kent Holiday Tournament and the Friar Duals."

Davis went 7-1 to improve his overall record to 29-6, and Fish won seven of eight bouts for an overall record of 20-8 on the year.

"Oscar is my top freshman. He made it to the finals of the Knightmare tournament," Boettcher said. "Dylan transferred from Northeast-Anne Arundel. He won the Kent Holiday Tournament and has avenged an early season loss to a wrestler from Towson by pinning him in the Raider Duals."

Rodriguez went 5-2 and has an overall record of 20-6, while Adewuyi went 4-2 and is 19-9 on the season.

Century finished third after losing, 57-15, to the Cavaliers, and 35-33, to the Friars.

The Knights were led by junior Cameron Wagner (150) and senior Chidima Iziogo (285). Wagner went 7-1 with 6 pins and Iziogo went 6-1 with four pins.

Junior George Halligan (144) went 6-2 with pins in all of his victories for the Knights, junior Chris Brooks (138) and senior Joey D'Orsogna (157/165) both won six of eight bouts with four pins, junior JT Ferguson (175) went 6-2 with five pins, and senior Donovan James (215) went 6-2 with two pins.

Halligan and Iziogo lead the Knights with 12 pins for the season, followed by Wagner with 11 and D'Orsogna with 10.

"We opened our tournament by dropping a very close dual to the host Archbishop Curley Friars. It was a very tight dual meet that ended up in an 8-6 split in Curley's favor,” said first-year coach Zach Blessing. “I was very happy with how our team responded by going 6-1 the rest of the way and taking care of business. We are excited to get back in the room and prepare for our stretch run of final MPSSAA duals and getting ready for the postseason.”
