Stephen Decatur's Juan Hinojosa received the incentive he needed during Saturday's Class 2A state duals at North Point High.
After scoring a second-period fall against his Huntingtown rival during the Seahawks' 51-15 semifinal victory, Hinojosa took notice of a 10-2 major decision by 14th-ranked freshman Cooper Spoales over fifth-ranked, fourth-place state finishing junior Kane Desch during Damascus' 39-27 triumph over the Mustangs.
Hinjosa was motivated to face Spoales in the Stephen Decatur vs. Damascus championship match given his own, 10-6, decision win over Desch.
"I saw the score and how badly Spoales beat Desch," Hinojosa said. "It gave me the inspiration to beat him even worse. I wanted to dominate and break him."
Hinojosa rolled to a 16-7 major decision against Spoales during a 50-22 dual meet rout as the Seahawks (32-1) earned their fifth straight Class 2A state dual meet crown.
"Juan wrestles hard," said Seahawks' coach Aaron August. "His feet are always moving and he's always trying to get in on his attacks."
The Seahawks totaled four pins and a major decision against Huntingtown, and six pins and two major decisions against Damascus. The Seahawks had five first-period falls against Damascus, a nine-time Montgomery County champion and an eight-time state dual meet title winner.
Last year's Seahawks went 28-3 and won their fourth straight of five state dual tournament crowns, the first being in 2008 under the late Kevin Gilligan, who coached from 2001 through 2011.
In all, nine wrestlers won twice for the Seahawks, with junior Aron August (132) having falls in 34 seconds and in 2:52, and sixth-ranked senior Kole Kohut (190) registering a 77-second pin and another in 3:23. Fourth-ranked senior Class 2A-1A state runner-up Gavin Solito (157), 20th-ranked junior Liam Hugues (120) and 23-ranked sophomore Alex Riehl (144) each contributed a first period pin and a major decision.
Second-ranked sophomore defending Class 1A-2A state champion Elijah Collick (113) had a fall and a 7-4 decision over Huntingtown's Landon Vercoe. Eighth-ranked senior fourth-place state finisher Reid Caimi (126) had a 72-second pin and a forfeit, and ninth-ranked senior third-place state finisher Parker Intrieri (165/175) had a major decision and a decision.
"We've worked hard to get where we are. I go out there every match trying to put on a show," Collick said. "Now, I just need to focus on what's next, which is winning another individual state championship."
The momentum means a lot to Solito, a two-time state runner-up. Solito went 28-4 as a sophomore, ending with a 9-7 state championship bout loss to Liberty senior Ryan Ohler, who finished with a record of 39-2.
As a junior, Solito went 47-2 with his 9-4 state championship bout setback coming against Owings Mills senior Amondre Wooden, who improved his record to 41-1.
"We know every day that in the room we have to continue to push one another, but this is the expectation I had for our team being this far into my career," Solito said. "We did just what we had to do in order to come out and to be successful. As for me, this is just another step toward the end goal. I'll just use this as momentum going into the last few weeks.
