What a year! We added Washington D.C., we added Maryland Girls, and we grew our lists for boys and teams. We had so much fun this year - thank you for the help, pictures, and feedback throughout the season.
As we drop the final rankings for the 2024-2025 High School Season, we’d like to take a look at who are the number one ranked competitors and how they are spread out around the state.
On the boys’ side of the ledger, the private school collective leads the way with nine top rated grapplers. In the girls’ rankings, just three number ones wrestle at a private school. Five schools contain those nine top ranked private sector guys with Archbishop Spalding, Bullis, Gilman, and Loyola-Blakefield having two atop the rankings. For Spalding that’s Sean Garretson (126) and Zane Leitzel (138). Spalding also has two number one ranked girls on their roster, Summer Mutschler (105) and Taina Fernandez (135).
Noah Tucker (157) and Salah Tsarni (165) are the Bullis School’s number one guys. Gilman’s top-rated wrestlers are Liam McGettigan (113) and Emmitt Sherlock (190). Loyola has both sides of the pendulum covered with Tyler Verceles at 106 and Luke Randazzo at 285 (they also had Jayden Jackson who is now a two time State Champion and Prep AA @ 120). Evan Boblits of St. Mary’s Ryken sits atop the 150lb list.
Three of the remaining boys’ number ones come from the big schools of the 4A/3A variety, Perry Hall’s Victor Marks-Jenkins (175), Northern of Calvert’s Drew Montgomery (144), and Albert Einstein’s Isaac Ogunlade (215).
The 2A/1A grapplers at the top of their weights are South Carroll’s Eli Gabrielson (120) and Boonsboro’s Tanner Halling (132).
Good Counsel had the third and final private school girl at the number one spot, Bella Sowards at 125.
Stephen Decatur was the only public school with more than one top ranked girl on their roster in Chaniah Bernier (170) and Azariyah Johnson (190).
Montgomery County put forth three number ones, Rockville’s Anastasia Dakoulas (130), Watkins Mills’ Jabea Ewane (235), and Walter Johnson’s Sonia Pegoue (145).
Two UCBAC girls can be found at the top of their respective weight classes, Havre de Grace’s Madison Birth (110) and Rising Sun’s Reagan Ramadan (155).
Two teams from the Western part of the state have reps in the number one position at 115 and 120lbs. Smithsburg’s Rileigh Romberger is perched atop the 120lbers, and Brunswick’s Katherine Virgilio has that honor at 115.
Howard County has one top rated girl, Marriotts Ridge’s Violet Land at 100lbs. The final girls’ number one is from Prince George’s County with Laurel’s Alexandra Ford (140).
Congratulations to all of the wrestlers that made the Legacy Rankings this folkstyle season. We have a few announcements up our sleeve for the spring so stay tuned!
