The OW goes to: Reagan Ramadan & Thurayah Mohamed

Rising Sun junior Anna Farr took 38 seconds to pin Arundel freshman Autumn Read for the 145-pound championship of Saturday’s Knightmare Invitational at Parkville High, this, after planting her semifinal opponent in 18 seconds.

Farr was joined on the victory podium by junior teammate Reagan Ramadan (155), who was named Outstanding Upperweight Wrestler. Ramadan scored falls in 38-seconds and 1:42, the latter in her title match against Kenwood senior Alainna McLaughlin.

But it was not long after winning her championship match that Ramadan approached Farr with breaking news: Farr’s older sibling, senior Elijah, was about to face Autumn’s brother, Arundel junior Pierce Read, in their 215-pound title match.

“The girl I went against for first place, my friend, Reagan, told me that her brother was going against Elijah for first as well,” Farr said. “We both thought it was pretty cool. I passed by Elijah, gave him a high-five, and told him, ‘Now your turn.’”

Elijah responded in similar fashion, earning his school-record 102nd career fall in 2:57 of his championship match before joining Anna in a unified celebration.

Rising Sun (48 points) finished seventh in the girls’ 12-team tournament, whose overall title went to York Suburban (151 points) of York, Pa. The runner-up, Edgewood (140), crowned seniors Lilly Maxfield (120) and Makayla Cole (235) among eight wrestlers who finished within the top four of their respective weight classes.

"It was fun to have a sibling competition for first place,” Anna Farr said. “Even though we're in two different divisions and weight classes, it brings out the best in both of us to compete, although I'd like to say I'm the better one out of the both of us.”

Anna followed Elijah onto the mats, where her older sibling is ranked sixth by Legacy Wrestling, has won three each in Upper Chesapeake Athletic Conference and regional titles, and placed third, fifth and sixth at the Class 2A-1A state tournament.

“Anna was originally going to be a manager for the team, but one day, before the season, she was messing around with me and said, ‘I'm just going to wrestle instead,’” said Elijah Farr, who is 3-0 this year with as many pins and a career record of 121-20.

“I said, ‘Go ahead.’ She said, ‘really?’ And I said, ‘yes.’ But I said, ‘just remember that if you're going to wrestle. You're going to be a wrestler, not a girl.’ I meant that she's going to have to pull her weight like everyone else on the team, whether or not she's a girl. Anna’s the first female wrestler at Rising Sun that I know of.”

Ranked fourth at 170 pounds by Legacy Wrestling, Anna placed third at states last year at 155 and posted a record of 16-2. Anna also earned titles in the UCBAC, regional and War On The Shore tournaments.

“This was a fun and exciting way to start the season that way this weekend,” Anna Farr said. “It's always fun to have a sibling rivalry with my brother. I'm ready to see how the rest of the season plays out.”

Edgewood coach Ken Ewers was pleased by the Rams’ second-place performance.

“I’m very proud of how our team performed. Girls wrestling at Edgewood has grown very quickly and this group has a nice balance of returning wrestlers as well as first-timers,” Ewers said. “I think this is great for both the co-ed and girls’ teams to see our success this weekend, and to start the season off on a high note. This type of success is great to reinforce the hard work they have all put in so far this season.”

Maxfield had falls in 50 seconds and in two minutes even, the latter, in her championship victory over Kenwood senior Aryanna Burley. Cole won her crown with an 87-second fall against Kenwood sophomore Zoey Lam.

“Having two champions on the girls’ side is very cool. Both Lilly and Makayla put in a ton of work this offseason to get better,” Ewers said. “I think with them seeing their hard work pay off early in the season, this will continue to motivate them moving forward.”

Placing second for the Rams were senior Jeriam Rivera Mendez (100), sophomore Zella Robinson (110) and sophomore Triniti Green (130), with third-place finishes from sophomore Mariana Rodriguez (105), and senior TeAja Adams (145), with junior Kylah Blanton (170) being fourth.

Kenwood and Patapsco crowned two champions apiece, the former in seniors Thurayah Mohamed (100) and Brooke Jones (110), and the latter, in sophomore Alba Zhibri (105) and junior Gianna Guarnera (140).

Named the Outstanding Lowerweight Wrestler, Mohamed reeled off pins in 86 and 89 seconds, the last in her title match with Mendez. Jones had a single match, winning by medical forfeit against Robinson.

Zhibri used a 20-second fall to reach her title bout, where she pinned York’s Alexis Valdez in 3:39. Guarnera needed only 78 seconds to win her lone match of the tournament, finishing Arundel junior Isabella Banaszynski.

Others winning titles were fourth-ranked senior Cielo Prieto (125) of Richard Montgomery, freshman Akasha Fernandez (130) of Linganore, and senior Maddie MacKenzie (170) of Towson.

A fifth-place finisher at states last year, Prieto had falls in 58 seconds and 4:54, the latter in her title match with Patuxent senior Emma Flanagan.

Fernandez won her title bout with Green in just 18 seconds, this, after scoring a fall in 3:05 of her semifinal bout.

Mackenzie pinned Patuxent sophomore Sophie Cobb in 4:27 of their championship match, having won her semifinal just 28 seconds.
