Archbishop Spalding coach Mike Laidey’s 23rd season began with bad news.
Laidley learned that his fourth-ranked Cavaliers would be without senior 285 pounder Delmar White, whose preseason injury would prevent him from defending his Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and Maryland Independent Schools’ State tournament championships.
“Going into the season, we knew we had a special team,” said Laidley, whose Cavalier finished fourth at MIAAs and fifth at states behind top-ranked champion Gilman. “But once Delmar was injured and determined to be out for his final season, the question whether or not we could compete for a state title was uncertain.”
But the Cavaliers made a statement at this weekend’s War On The Shore Tournament at Stephen Decatur High in Berlin, Maryland, crowning top-ranked senior Sean Garretson (126), top-ranked junior Zane Leitzel (138), and third-ranked junior Eli Chesla (113) en route to overcoming second-ranked runner-up South Carroll for the overall title, 225.5 points to-217.
The Cavaliers placed eight wrestlers within the top five of their weight classes, with eighth-ranked senior Henry Gessford (144) finishing third, sixth-ranked freshman Charlie Mutschler (106) and fourth-ranked sophomore Quentin Bailey (120) taking fourth, and 14th-ranked senior Roc Zang (132) and 15th-ranked senior Dylan Briles (157) both being fifth.
“We are young in some weight classes, but overall, we have a full lineup,” said Laidley, whose Cavaliers improved on their fourth-place finish at the December 12-13 Ray Oliver Tournament McDonogh. “We told our wrestlers that if we’re going to achieve our goals of winning MIAA and state titles, we would have to do so with the kids we have in the room.”
South Carroll crowned top-ranked sophomore Eli Gabrielson (120), with runner-up finishes from top-ranked junior Jo Jo Gigliotti (144), second-ranked senior Evan Owen (138) and fourth-ranked junior Grayson Barnhill (113).
Sixth-ranked junior Landon Hamper (190) and fifth-ranked senior Manny Rodrigues (215) were third, and eighth-ranked sophomore Brody Henry (132) was sixth as South Carroll placed seven wrestlers within the top six of their weights.
Third-ranked Loyola finished fourth after crowning top-ranked senior Luke Randazzo (285) and second-ranked freshman Tyler Verceles (106), while 27th-ranked Bullis finished eighth with champions in top-ranked sophomore Salah Tsarni (165), top-ranked senior Sepanta Ahanj-Elias (190) and fourth-ranked sophomore Noah Tucker (157).
Other title-winners were top-ranked senior Evan Boblits (150) of St. Mary’s Ryken, and third-ranked senior Drew Montgomery (144) of Northern-Calvert County.
Sixth-ranked St. Frances placed 10th behind fourth-ranked runner-up, senior Elijah Josey (190), while 16th-ranked Stephen Decatur finished 13th paced by 11th-ranked runner-up senior Nate McDaniel (215).
Josey won his semifinal, 10-3, over Hamper, who is a defending Class 2A-1A state champion. McDaniel earned a semifinal, 10-2 major decision over Rodrigues, a Class 2A-1A state titlist as a sophomore.
Eighth-ranked South River finished 15th after receiving a third-place effort from second-ranked senior Busayo Balogun (285), a Class 4A-3A state runner-up.
Balogun’s 10th-ranked sophomore teammate, Jackson Peeples (120), a defending Class 4A-3A state champion, went 3-2 with two pins and a technical fall but did not place.
“Our wrestlers historically get better throughout the year and peak at the end of the season. They also believe in our coaches and their training,” Laidley said. “We’re pretty excited about what could happen at the end of the season, and obviously, these kids believe in it too. It’s a fun group to be around.”
144 pounds: No. 3 Drew Montgomery, Northern-Calvert over No. 1 Jo Jo Gigliotti, South Carroll, 4-1 overtime decision– The overtime score was tied at 1-1 when Montgomery countered Gigliotti’s overtime shot for a three-point takedown to avenge a 4-2 dual meet loss of a year earlier.
“I used a move called a high-leg, which is also called a hip-tap,” said Montgomery, who improved to 18-0 after posting a record of 37-1 last season with the Patriots, his loss coming in a dual meet against Gigliotti. “I was trailing starting in the second period when JoJo got an escape, and I continued to trail, 1-0, until the third period when I got my own escape, tying the match."
It should be noted that Montgomery started last season at St. Mary’s Ryken where he picked up three losses including one to Zane Leitzel at Ray Oliver and two at the Beast of the East.
The victory represented the school-record 150th for Montgomery, while the loss was the first in the high school career for Gigliotti (13-1) to a Maryland public or private school wrestler during the high school regular or postseason.
Northern's second-year coach Cam Watkins is a former champion in the MIAA, private school states and Class 4A-3A State tournaments who was once a National Preps Tournament runner-up.
“It represents something else special in that this was Drew’s 150th high School win, and he surpassed the program’s all-time wins this past weekend,” Watkins said. “This is a big win for Drew. They wrestled last year, and it went the other way. Each match is important. It’s too bad they don't see each other more often.”
Montgomery reached the finals by following a 17-2 technical fall with pins in 56 and 31 seconds and an 8-0 major decision. Gigliotti’s path to the title match consisted of a 17-2 technical fall, pins in 52 and 44 seconds, and another in 2:37.
Montgomery is in pursuit of his third straight Class 4A-3A state title after being a runner-up as a freshman, while Gigliotti is a two-time champion in the Carroll County, Class 2A-1A North Region and Class 2A-1A state tournaments.
Montgomery and Gigliotti had a common opponent in fourth-ranked junior Beau Schmidt of Northeast, a two-time state runner-up, two-time Anne Arundel County champion and winner of one regional title in two championship berths. Last season, Schmidt lost, 4-2, to Gigliotti as well as, a pair of regional- and state title-bout losses to Montgomery, by 5-1, and, 2-0, respectively.
“It’s nice to see my hard work is paying off,” Montgomery said. "It feels good to be undefeated, but it doesn’t change anything moving forward.”
150 pounds: No. 1 Evan Boblits, St. Mary’s Ryken over No. 2 Calvin Kraisser, Centennial, 1-0 decision– Boblits not only faced, in Kraisser, his weekend training partner at HeadHunters in Columbia, Maryland, but, also, the younger brother of his 27-year-old first-year coach, Austin, whose father, Cliff, coached Calvin.
Boblits (14-0) escaped early in the third period to win a clash of unbeaten seniors against Kraisser (18-1), with whom he had regularly practiced on weekends.
“Evan escaped at the beginning of the third period,” said Austin Kraisser, winner of four each in county and regional crowns as well as three state titles in four championship berths through 2016. “Evan didn’t ride legs too much. There was a lot of action when both guys were on the bottom. It was a good match where both guys battled hard the whole time.”
Boblits’ path to the finals comprised a pair of technical falls by 18-3 and 16-0, as well as falls by 70 seconds and two minutes. Kraisser was equally dominant, winning by falls in 47 and 57 seconds as well as one in 4:26 to go with an 18-7 major decision.
Committed to the Naval Academy, Boblits is a senior three-time WCAC title-winner who has earned one private schools state title in a pair of championship bout appearances and placed fourth and fifth in the National Preps Tournament.
Kraisser, who is projected to win a fourth state championship, has not been beaten by a public-school wrestler, having lost once each by decision to Gilman’s top-ranked Emmitt Sherlock, Sherlock’s graduated older brother, Tyson, and Loyola’s graduated Judah Aybar, all of whom were MIAA and/or private schools state champions.
126 pounds: No. 1 Sean Garretson, Archbishop Spalding over Quinn McBride, Penn Ridge High, Pa., 11-0 major decision– Garretson (14-3 record) dominated in his first competition at 126 pounds since dropping from 132, reaching the finals following a pin in 2:33 and successive technical falls of 19-4, 19-2, and, 23-15.
Garretson easily shut out McBride, who had won his semifinal, 12-9, over Stephen Decatur’s second-ranked two-time Class 2A-1A state champion junior Elijah Collick, whose record slipped to 18-1.
“Any wrestler will tell you that cutting weight in wrestling is not easy. But with that being said, I feel big at 126 and I match up much better, pound-for-pound,” said Garretson, a two-time MIAA champion who was second at states. “I want to not only win matches, but to dominate them. believe that by doing this, I’ve given myself the best opportunity to do that.”
Collick won his third-place bout, 14-7, over Cape Henlopen senior Andrij Szczesniuk. Szczesniuk had blanked Huntingtown’s fourth-ranked sophomore Landen Vercoe, 7-0, before losing his semifinal, 23-15, to Garretson. Vercoe was third last year at Class 2A-1A states, and finished fifth at War On The Shore.
“It felt great to be able to beat my opponents, and, specifically, not to give up any points in the finals. I want to win every position,” said Garretson, who placed third at McDonogh’s Ray Oliver Tournament. “I want to make an emphasis on not giving up any easy points moving forward. I look forward to getting back into the room and improving. I want to take my wrestling skills to the next level and to compete with the toughest wrestlers around the country.”
138 pounds: No. 1 Zane Leitzel, Archbishop Spalding over No. 2 Evan Owen, South Carroll, 9-5 decision – A returning MIAA and private schools state runner-up, Leitzel (15-4) reached the finals after a 16-0 technical fall, a pin in 1:42, a 19-3 technical fall and a semifinal, 13-5 major decision over fourth-ranked Loyola junior Josh Hale, who was fourth at both MIAAs and states last season.
Owen had improved his record to 14-0 with an 8-7 overtime decision over senior Trevor Copes of Caesar Rodney, a Delaware state champion. A three-time county and regional champion, Owen was a state runner-up for the second straight year last season after having placed fourth as a freshman.
Owen’s four losses at states have been to eventual champions. Owen was pinned as a freshman in his third-place bout by Boonsboro’s Tanner Halling, now a top-ranked 132-pounder who won a Class 2A-1A crown last season. Owen’s other three losses at states were to Rising Sun’s graduated three-time title-winner Tyler Garvin, the past two coming by decision in their championship bouts.
“I feel as if being able to get into my offensive attacks is what worked well in my match with Evan Owen,” said Leitzel, who was third at McDonogh’s Ray Oliver tournament and eighth at Beast Of The East. “Winning this tournament gives me a feeling of accomplishment because it was something that I had written down on my goal sheet at the start of the year. I am able to achieve this by trusting in my training and in my partners in the practice room.”
120 pounds: No. 1 Eli Gabrielson, South Carroll over Malachi Stratton, Sussex Central, 15-3 major decision– A transfer from St. Mary’s Ryken in St. Mary’s County, Gabrielson earned last year’s Washington Catholic Athletic Conference crown, finished second at states and fourth at National Preps.
Gabrielson also placed third at last year’s War On The Shore Tournament, where Stratton, a senior, finished fourth in a different weight class.
The path to the finals for Gabrielson comprised a forfeit, a 95-second pin, a 16-0 technical fall and a semifinal pin in 1:42 over Bailey, who was third at MIAAs last season. Gabrielson’s domination continued in his title bout with Stratton, whose record fell to 24-7.
Gabrielson earned his second tournament crown of the season following that at the King Of The Rock tournament in December.
“I knew my conditioning was good, so I wasn’t afraid to compete from any position,” said Gabrielson, whose record improved to 14-0. “I’ve put in too much work to lose big matches like this. I’m just trying to remain dangerous on the mat.”
285 pounds: No. 1 Luke Randazzo, Loyola over Eliedxan Jarquin-Torres, William Penn, 1-0 decision– Randazzo was runner-up to White in each of last year’s MIAA and private schools state tournaments, being pinned in the former and losing by 1-0 decision in the latter.
But after earning his first-ever crown in the Ray Oliver Tournament at McDonogh, Randazzo failed to place at the following weekend’s Beast Of The East Tournament.
Randazzo blazed a trail to the finals on pins in 64, 93 and 44 seconds to go with a 17-0 technical fall in his semifinal bout. Randazzo’s championship bout escape held up for the victory.
“I got my escape early in the second period, and this win means a lot to me,” said Randazzo, who raised his record on the year to 18-2 while that of Jarquin-Torres, a senior, slipped to 17-2. “After coming off Beast Of The East and not getting the results I wanted, I feel as if this tournament was a bounce back. I’m ready for whatever the rest of the season holds.”
106 pounds: No. 2 Tyler Verceles, Loyola over Benjamin Donato, Caesar Rodney, fall, 4:24–
Verceles continued his momentum after having won the Ray Oliver Tournament at McDonogh and placing fifth at Beast Of The East, raising his record on the year to 20-2.
Verceles reached the finals following a 17-2 technical fall, a 76-second pin and falls in 1:55 and 5:46, the latter in his semifinal against Mutschler.
“This performance was a display of the technique I have been implementing in practice for the past two months with my teammates,” Verceles said. “Winning this tournament with all technical falls and pins reinforces that I can wrestle and compete against elite high school competition.”
165 pounds: No. 1 Salah Tsarni, Bullis over Colin Jackson, Thomas Edison, 165 pounds, fall, 3:44– A returning Interstate Athletic Conference and private schools champion, Tsarni placed second at each of the difficult Ray Oliver at McDonogh and Beast Of The East Tournaments.
But The War On The Shore was Tsarni’s first action since being injured and missing the December 26-27 Damascus Holiday Tournament, won by his Bulldogs’ teammates.
Tsarni didn’t miss a beat, running his record to 16-2 with his championship fall against Jackson, whose record slipped to 4-1. Ranked 12th nationally, Tsarni reached the finals following pins in 80 seconds and 5:32 as well as technical falls of 19-2 and 21-5.
190 pounds: No. 1 Sepanta Ahanj-Elias, Bullis over No. 4 Elijah Josey, St. Francis, 4-0 decision— Ahanj-Elias continued his run of victories over former state champions by defeating Josey, a senior whose record slipped to 15-3 while Ahanj-Elias’ rose to 22-3.
Josey transferred from Portsmouth High in New Hampshire, where he was a state champion and a runner-up in the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships comprising Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Ahanj-Elias followed a 24-second pin with consecutive technical falls of 15-0, 21-2 and 17-0 to reach his title match with Josey, who had won his semifinal, 10-3, over South Carroll’s defending Class 2A-1A state champion Landon Hamper.
A two-time IAC champion who placed second twice and fifth once at private school states, Ahanj-Elias won the Damascus Holiday Invitational Tournament at 215 pounds by dominating Einstein’s previously undefeated second-ranked senior Isaac Ogunlade by 20-5 technical fall and 7-0 decision, and Williamsport’s third-ranked senior Adin Hastings by fall and 9-0 major decision.
Ahanj-Elias was named Outstanding Upper Weight wrestler at Damascus after handling Ogulande, a defending Class 4A-3A state champion at 215 pounds, and Hastings, a Class 2A-1A state runner-up last season after winning states as a sophomore.
157 pounds: No. 4 Noah Tucker, Bullis, over No. 3 Will Buckler, Huntingtown, vs. No. 4 Noah Tucker, Bullis, 6-2 decision– A returning IAC champion who was fourth at states last year, Tucker added the War On The Shore crown to that he won at the Damascus Holiday Tournament.
Tucker earned falls in 47 seconds and 2:58 followed by a 15-0 technical fall and a semifinal 10-2 major decision to reach the finals against Buckler, who transferred from St. Mary’s Ryken where he placed third at states last season.
Buckler’s record slipped to 7-1 against Tucker, whose 23-3 record includes having placed third at McDonogh’s Ray Oliver event and winning three of five bouts at Beast Of The East.
