St. Mary’s Ryken’s top-ranked Evan Boblits (150 pounds) used falls in 27, 28 and 35 seconds to win his fourth straight Washington Catholic Athletic Conference crown, leading the 15th-ranked Knights to a runner-up finish to Paul VI Catholic of Virginia on Saturday at Good Counsel.

Boblits will pursue his second Maryland Private Schools state title and his third championship bout appearance today at Morgan State University a week before attempting to improve on fourth and fifth place finishes at the National Prep Tournament.

Boblits scored his title-bout fall against senior Tom Braden of St. John’s College, who is ranked No. 1 by Legacy Wrestling in the D.C. ratings.

“I think WCACs was just a building block in my goal,” said Boblits, who is headed for the Naval Academy. “Sure, it’s a nice achievement being a four-time WCAC champ, but my ultimate goal is to become a state champ and prep champ this year.”

Also winning a WCAC crown for the Knights (174 points) was 10th-ranked sophomore Henry Moltumyr (126), who won his title bout, 7-6, over junior Leo Baldolato of Paul VI (245 points), which had four title winners.

Crowning three champions each were the third-placed Gonzaga Eagles (153.5 points) in senior Brayden Meeker (120), junior Jethro Ward (144) and senior Matt Van Sice (175), and the fourth-place Good Counsel Falcons (147 points) in junior Damien Fraley (132), sixth-ranked junior George Tate (190) and 20th-ranked junior Bryton Brown (285).

Ranked second in the D.C. ratings, Meeker had falls in 32 seconds, 2:42 and 68 seconds, the latter in his title match DeMatha sophomore Dexter Kane, who was third at WCACs last year.

A runner-up at WCACs last season who is top-ranked in the D.C. ratings, Ward scored a 66-second fall and received a forfeit before winning his championship bout, 17-6, over junior Koen Fredricks of Paul VI.

A returning fourth-place finisher at WCACs who is top-ranked in the D.C. ratings, Van Sice used a forfeit and a 16-1 technical fall to reach the finals. There, Van Sice scored a 13-2 major decision over 18th-ranked repeat WCAC finalist Joseph Lagman, a senior from DeMatha.

Fraley used falls in 67 seconds and 2:25 to reach his title match, where scored a 92-second pin over sophomore Cruz Liu of Paul VI.

A returning third-place finisher at states, Tate improved on last year’s runner-up finish with pins in 28 seconds, 3:22 and 75 seconds, the last against junior Gavin Appleton of Paul VI.

Brown used a 76-second pin and a forfeit to reach the finals, where he scored a fall in 2:48 over 21st-ranked repeat runner-up Sean Jewett, a senior from St. Mary’s Ryken.

Other champions were fourth-ranked senior Rhonin Swenson (165) of Bishop McNamara and freshman Zane Messiter (106) of St. John’s, who is top-ranked in the D.C. ratings.

A state runner-up who was third at WCACs last year, Swenson scored pins in 66 seconds and four minutes to reach his championship bout, where he registered yet another four-minute fall against junior Bojan Sulc of Gonzaga. Ranked second in the D.C. ratings, Sulc won last year’s 175-pound WCAC title by a technical fall.

Messiter used a forfeit and a pin to reach his title match, where he scored a 7-0 decision over freshman Peyton Friedman of Bishop O’Connell.
