Winters Mill Wins Meaningfully

Can you say that three times quickly? Neither can we but Winter's Mill crushed it this weekend.

Winters Mill juniors Gabbie McLeod (155) and Jade Love (235) had pinned all of their opponents, none of whom had scored a point against them entering last Friday’s Carroll County tournament at Westminster High.

Their run continued as the county title-winning duo was joined by sophomore teammate Maiah Sweet (190) among its champions as the Falcons (124 points) dethroned defending champion Francis Scott Key (112).

Finishing second for the Falcons were sophomores Carli Ireland (105), Christina Padilla (110), Maggie Morley (135) and Amelia Boddie (155) as well as juniors Mele James (145) and Addison Vallandingham (170).

McLeod used falls in 88 and 34 seconds to earn her title, improving her overall record to 16-0.

"This feels nice. This is just the first stage because I didn't do so well last year in the states, placing fifth," McLeod said. "I lost to a girl I had beaten before, so I'm ready for the regional and state tournaments. This is my comeback season to show what I've got."

Love’s only match was her title bout against sophomore Manchester Valley sophomore Zoey Lease. Love finished Lease 37 seconds to improve to 14-0.

“I’m focused on what I’m doing on the collar tie, where my feet go, how my hips are, and I throw them," Love said. "I didn’t go to the states last year because I was injured, but my mentality is that it’s my match and I’m going to win."

Sweet improved to 15-2 using falls in 82 seconds and 3:31, the latter being against Francis Scott Key sophomore Emily Arboleda.

“Maiah Sweet is the underdog of the year wrestling against bigger opponents. We’d like to get her to 160," said Falcons coach John Lowe. "Maiah has incredible balance and strength, and she has beaten and pinned four state place winners this year. Be on the lookout for her at the state tournament."

Juniors Ava Krupp (120) and Maddy Dehoff (145) and seniors Keira Cooper (130) and Maria Arboleda (170) won titles for the runner-up Eagles, who are coached by Davey Blake, a winner of three Class 2A-1A state titles in four championship berths before graduating in 1988 from Kent County High School with a career record of 141-2.

Cooper improved to 17-1 on falls in 15 seconds and 2:18, the second coming in her title match with sophomore Chloe Chwang of Manchester Valley.

Krupp had pins in 29 seconds and 4:00, the latter in her championship bout against Westminster junior Jayla Schropshire. Dehoff’s lone match was a fall in 3:47 of her title match with James.

"I placed second at this tournament last year. I was tired of losing," said Dehoff, who improved to 12-3. "I was wrestling 170 last year when I was weighing 150 pounds, but I placed sixth at the states. I feel a lot stronger at this weight and everyone else feels a lot lighter."

Maria Arboleda won her only match by 3-0 decision over Vallandingham, improving her record to 13-6 on the year.

"It was a close match, but I had a goal to do this and I accomplished that goal," Arboleda said. "Last year I placed second so to place first is a huge accomplishment. This shows how much I've improved. "

Third-place Manchester Valley's champions were sophomores Brynn Ryan (115) and Addyson Grubb (135) as well as seniors Faith Day (100) and Layla Lagunas (110), with Day being a defending state champion.

Day improved to 16-1 on pins in 5:36 and 4:47, the second in her championship match with sophomore Ellie Kinloch of Francis Scott Key.

"It's a bittersweet moment. This is the last county tournament of my high school career and it's coming to an end soon," said Day, a repeat county champion. "I'm making it worth every minute, going after everyone that I can and doing what I can to chase the win. I'm trying to enjoy it. This feels pretty good."

Lagunas registered falls in 19 and 95 seconds, the latter against Padilla to improve to 15-2. Grubb used falls in 68 and 54 seconds, the latter for her crown against Winters Mill junior Maggie Morley.

Ryan had falls in 1:15 and 5:05, the second against junior title match rival Isabella Garrity of South Carroll to improve her record to 17-3.

Fourth-place Westminster crowned senior state champion Taylor Mead (140) and junior Caroline McCann (125), with freshman Aubrey Ohler (105) winning for Liberty.

Mead improved to 13-1 by pinning Francis Scott Key's state runner-up Addie Kraics in 72 seconds of their title match after having decked her semifinal opponent in 80 seconds.

"I had wrestled her a couple of weeks ago for their senior night at FSK, and the match took a lot longer. I won by points, but I was really sick that night," Mead said. "I was excited for the match because I definitely believe that I could have finished the last match quicker. Regardless, she's a really tough opponent and it's always good to compete against her. I was just excited to have good competition."

McCann rose to 16-5 on the year following a semifinal fall in 1:49 and a championship bout 10-0 major decision over South Carroll freshman Rhea Dupre.

Ohler earned her first county title on pins in 50 seconds and in 3:23, the latter against Winters Mill sophomore Cari Ireland in the title bout as she improved her overall record on the year to 18-4.

Wrestling is a family tradition for Ohler, whose older brother, Ryan, won a 145-pound Class 2A-1A state title as a senior at Liberty in 2022.

Ohler's other sibling, Dylan, is a 144-pound junior at Liberty, earned his third straight county title on Friday, holding off South Carroll junior Angelo Marchany, 3-2, to raise his record on the season to 32-5.

Aubrey's victory transpired about 20 minutes prior to Dylan’s.

“All of the hard work in the rooms has finally paid off," Aubrey said. "This feels pretty good, especially being a freshman."
